Trying To Locate The Cheapest BGS Card ...

So I'm a little bit "out of practice" on cracking a card out of a BGS holder. As such, I'm trying to locate the cheapest graded BGS card I can find to practice with. $3.00 with shipping and handling isn't too hard. But at $2.00 or even $1.00, it becomes a bit of a challenge. It's actually turned into a little game; to find a card worth virtually nothing that someone paid grading, shipping and handling fees.

For example, here's a 1998 Donruss Diamond Kings Alex Rodriguez BGS 8 that sold for $1.82.

Auction

I would have bid $1.83. If I can ever find a BGS card for $1.00 with shipping and handling, now that would be something else!

Yes, EBAY has turned into a video game.

What are you doing to crack the cards out? Best method offered to me was from Bri. Take a philips head screwdriver, place it towards the top of the holder, hit the screwdriver with a hammer and it busts to pieces. I havent damaged a card yet although it's a risk. No easy cracking on those suckers!

JackWesq, PM me your address. I have a BGS 8.5 that was sent to me by BGS. Some unknown player and I have no idea why they sent it to me. I think it was their chitty way of saying Merry Christmas to me last year. Anyways, it's yours if you want it to practice on.

Guaranteed, this will be a poor description, but I'll give it my best.

    1. Take a BGS graded card and obtain a clamp wrench, e.g. the kind where you push roll the "little round thing" and the clamp comes close together.

    2. Clamp the BGS card so that the handle is pointed upwards, probably at around a 40 to 45 degree angle. I'm sure it differs depending on the wrench.

    3. Clamp the BGS card so that the clamp is over about 1/2 of the BGS label and clamp it near one of the corners.

    4. Place the clamped card flat on a desk so that the entire label (maybe 1/2 inch) extends over the desk.

    5. Hold firm the slab that is on top of the desk and with a strong force, push down on the wrench.

    6. This will crack one corner of the BGS card.

    7. Do the same with the other corner.

    8. Once cracked, use a flat head screw driver and slowly "peel" open the slab and extract the card.

I know. It's a horrible description, but it's the best I can do. Thanks.

If you need more practice after you demolish Bryan's slab, pm me your address. I'm sure I still have several worthless cards/slabs from when I used to submit to those guys.

I've also got one bgs card in my glove compartment; I used it a couple of times this winter to clear my windshield. It works amazingly well, lol.

    OMG That is awful!

You're much better off taking your time with a dremel or using a hammer and (screwdriver/chisel/gasket scraper) to bust that "edge" around the whole outside of the card. Then insert your tool of choice into the top edge between the two slabs. Slowly tap it with a hammer to separate the 2 slabs from one another. Take out your card and carefully cut it out of it's protective condom. DO NOT GET OVERZEALOUS WITH THIS! I tried cutting one edge and just pulling the card out like you would with a penny sleeve and I ended up creasing my 2000 P+P Tom Brady ($150) in half. Cut at least the top and one side before attempting to pull out the card.

That's too bad, envoy. In general I have to agree, take your time, cutting it free ALL the way around - sacrifice the holder - not the card!

I usually just grab a BIG pair of pliers and crack one corner of the case. Then insert the screwdriver (slowly as I have damaged more than one card during this part of the process) and slowly pry apart the two sides. I have had luck with PSA, GAI, BGS, and SGC sabs this way, though I worry the card might bend, never has!
