SSP -- For those interested in Roman history (books)

One of my volunteer jobs is with the local Friends of the Library bookstore. We are a non-profit organization and our goals are to raise funds for library upkeep and to promote literacy at all stages of life, but especially early childhood. Not many Friends groups have a day-to-day bookstore, but ours does. Most books cost fifty cents, newer ones up to $4. We do pretty well by that model. But every now and then we get a really interesting bulk donation.

A few months ago a local man passed away rather suddenly due to a mysterious illness. Just a few days ago his wife, finally able to deal with the loss, brought in the bulk of his library as a donation. According to her he spent upwards of $30,000 on this collection. But there was good reason: he was writing a book! The donation in his memory consists of almost 150 books, almost all of which focused on ancient Rome. This collection covers the full spectrum of Roman history. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to speak to the widow myself, so I don't know what exactly the book was to be about or even whether fiction or nonfiction.

Since I'm the young, "tech savvy" one of the Friends group, it's fallen to me to try to make the most of this donation. We really don't want to sell this collection that had so much time put into it at dollars at a time. I'll gradually be listing it on Amazon, eBay, and perhaps other online selling sites. Right now, though, I'm still sorting the five boxes of material and trying to get an idea of how to go about this. As a preliminary sorting method, I entered the books into a LibraryThing account. This isn't the complete collection, but most.

Since I know we have several people here interested in ancients, and I know how a Darksider's love of coins is matched by his love of history, I figured that I'd give you guys a heads up on this collection. If you see anything that interests you in the LibraryThing listing let me know. Everything is for sale, but we are trying to get as near fair market value as possible. If you're interested in several books, we'll find a way to make a deal that benefits both of us. All proceeds will go to the Friends of the Sierra Vista Public Library. We are looking into ways to either give some back to the widow and/or memorialize this man who gave so much.

    Me too image

And just to clarify, the LibraryThing page where I listed those isn't a selling site. It's intended for bibliophiles to keep track of their books and has the double purpose of being a "Web 2.0" "social networking" site (to allow like minded readers to find each other and blah, blah...). I just used it out of familiarity and ease of listing.

If you're interested in anything on that page, PM me the titles, we'll settle on a price and go from there. I can take PayPal, check, M/O, and more if need be.

There are a few there on Roman Britain! Thought I'd point that out since it seems to be an area of interest for some image
