I HATE Clemens. Freakin' bounty hunter. I was JUST starting to like him again after having left Boston, since he screwed the Yankees too when he left there. But now he's back for the biggest paycheck. I hope his arm falls off and Steinbrenner wastes some more money.
Say what you will about Roger, but he's still a stud out there and will bolster a Yankees staff that needed a lift like this.

Guess the difference was the Yanks wanted him NOW and both the Red Sox and Astros didnt want him until end of June/beginning of July. And dont fault the Yanks for paying the guy because both the Bosox and Astros were willing to give him the big paydays also.
I just wonder what this will do for the future of baseball. I understand every players goal of getting paid and with the revenue they generate for teams I really don't blame them. I just have never seen a situation like Clemens where every year now he plays to the highest bidder. Is this how the big time players will do this from now on? Just sign a series of one year deals and rest their arms until June and figure out which team has the best chance to win? I may be biased being a Twins fan and dealing with the small market bull even though I don't put a lot of stock into that since their owner is a billionare many times over. Just sad that people can't commit to an organization early in the year and see it through one way or the other.

The thing is, you wont see that. Clemens is and has been a very unique situation. Unless of course another pitcher like Clemens comes along at that age and can still throw the way he does. Players go for the multi-year deals because they want the longevity and guaranteed paycheck. Its no risk for Clemens if he gets injured...he has his HOF career already behind him.
I know that Clemens is unique in this situation. I just wonder what will happen with any pitcher over the age of 35 who just decides to be a hired gun for a year. God bless the Yankees for signing him, I'm not a small market homer who doesn't think this is fair. I just don't like where this is heading. What's to stop a 30 year old pitcher from doing the same? If they are healthy and have the stats why not save your arm and sign one year deals? Why a 5 year deal for 100 million when you could take one year deals for 20 to 30 million a year and save your arm and possibly keep racking up rings?

<< <i>With that announcement, Roger Clemens has officially Jumped The Shark! What a joke... >>
That's what the Red Sox thought after the 1996 season, and then look what he did with the Jays in 1997 and 1998 >>
I think the Red Sox AND the Yanks, thought the same thing after the '03 season. Hey, if David Wells can comeback at 43yrs and 50lbs overweight, Roger can too
I wonder if his number will be 45 since that's what washed-up should-stay-retired athletes use when they have a mid-life crisis and come back from retirement. (Jordan)

Hey if the guy still has skills, dont knock the mid life crisis. Phil Neikro won 16 games at age 45 and we know what Julio Franco brings to the field at his age. Some guys retire but still have something to offer.
Washed up? His ERA was 2.30 last yr. It wasn't his fault he went 7-6... the offense sux in Houston and the bullpen has blown quite a few leads for Clemens when they did score a run or 2 for him over the past couple of seasons. Granted, at 45 yrs old, he's only good for 5 or 6 innings, but at least the Yanks will get him some run support.
I'm just hoping he doesn't end up in Tampa, rehabbing with the great Carl Pavano and the rest of the injured Yankee pitchers.

Anyone who thinks Roger Clemens is going to going to save the Yankees season is dillusional. On his best days last year, he squeaked into the 7th inning. Most games he went between 5 and 6 innings. Against the National League.
Yes, maybe he's better than the slew of AAA products the Yanks trotted out there in April, but he will struggle in the American League. If his ERA is lower than 4.00, I'll be shocked.
For a team that needs their starters to start taking it into the 7th inning and beyond, Clemens is the worst fit possible. The Yanks bullpen will be toast by August.
At this stage in their careers Roger Clemens is Brett Favre with talent. They are both prima donnas but for a majority of the season Clemens is still good and every team in baseball would take him on their staff. Cannot say the same for Favre.
For all of you naysayers you are witnessing the greatest starting pitcher in modern history and I do not use that superlative lightly. Better than Seaver, Koufax, Spahn, Gibson, Ryan, Carlton, Feller. Those players were great. Clemens is better. Seven Cy Youngs, came in third just two years ago with a 1.87 ERA! Houston's offense and bullpen cost him ten wins the last two years.
Is it the money that irks you? The man can still do it. Of course he has an ego. Put it in perspective-people blow $10 a ticket to watch a no talent Will Ferrell and he has .0000001% of acting talent that Clemens has in baseball and he made $40 million in 2005.
<< <i>They can have him. Am sure he'll get a warm welcome at Fenway. >>
Great guy, that Clemens. Amazing how he has increased endurance and speed (and bulky muscle weight) as time passes... >>
I've followed Clemens for years. I've seen no speed or endurance increase from him. His fastball has consistently gone down in velocity over the past 5 years. From a mid-high 90's in his prime, to a low 90's now. As mentioned before, he is a 6-7 innings pitcher at best now if limited to pitch count of approx. 100. The reason why he's lasted this long is because his splitter is so darn good and has maintained his good control. I really give him credit for this.
Damn ! I just read that today the Yankees Got Clemens back . Seems to me , with the exception of the 2006 season, it seems like he should be able to get the job done . But that is some insane paycheck ! Personally, I think Steinbrenner is out of his mind . What the heck does that work out to be per inning ? I mean if I'm paying that kind of cabbage, I want nothing but K's . And that's just not gonna happen . I just can't believe there is no one out there that the Yankees could have picked up who is just as good if not better , especially for all that money . I guess we'll wait and see what happens . I wish him good luck though . I definitely admire the man for staying in the game this long, I'm sure he's not hurting for cash, so i'm going to go with the love for the game and the records . If I could still play the game I know I would .
Steroids aren't clemens thing. I don't believe they're Bonds thing either. I don't think Piazzo or Greenwell or who ever else they said was on them either. How come the guy is still hitting homeruns like crazy? They must be testing him every day.
