Probably a 1 or 2 due to the "paper loss" in the corners. It is well worn , but the tearing in the right corner may be more telling.

Still it's a Mantle. Thats my 1/2 cents.

I would be worried that it was authentic first. Around his face it looks odd to me.

I agree, also the colors almost look too bright for the wear. Just my 2 cents

The first thing I said when I saw the card was: "It's a reprint".

It is a one or a two. I've never seen a fake with the perfect looking Bowman wax stain on the back so I am going to assume the scan is what makes the front a little distorted.

    good 2
  • Thanks for the help....I'm thinking of trading for this card. The guy I'm trading with wants $2000 in trade. The cards he wants are all modern, that I have doubles of. I also got them all a lot lower in price then what they are going for now. I know a PSA 2 would go for around $1800- $2000, now that he sent me a better scan the card looks like it could be a 2. Like to hear some more opinions, I'm going to give him a answer tomorrow.

    Thanks

since you are only giving up doubles it's something to consider. I got a nice 3 for $1900 a few months back. remember, you still need to pay to have it graded. which with shipping each way and grading fee you are probably at $100. i'd try to get if for closer to $1500. also, you really need to see it in person to measure it and make sure it is the real deal.
  • It looks like the majority feel it's a 2....any more opinions.

Have the guy send it in for grading. Offer to cover the grading fees if it is legit and PSA grades it.

I'm VERY skeptical that some guy is wanting modern cards for this card and the fact that it's not graded. Assuming he has been on this planet for a small portion of the past 15 years, he must know the vast benefits of grading often-counterfeited cards and vintage Mantles have to top the list.

I think it is legit and it's still a 2 in my eyes.

    Good luck.

The card looks legit to me. The poor registration is a factory print problem, I've never seen a fake of the 51 Bowman Mantle with registration issues like that, and that particular registration would be very difficult to replicate. (You'll note that the green from the trees at the bottom of the picture overlap the lower black border - this would be an extremely difficult effect to reproduce.) The wax stain also looks authentic, I've never seen a fake back of a 51 Bowman Mantle with a wax stain in that location and in that shape.

As for grade, I think it's more in line with a 3 than a 2, depending on the extent of the surface creases that are evident on the back, and how strong they come through on the front, if at all.

Hmmm. I'd definitely question it's authenticity first .

Always a tough call on this card from a scan. The wear looks real. 51 Bowmans can have that natural ink chipping throughout the front of the card like this one. Could be a genuine card but I wouldn't guarantee it. Problem is that these reprints have been around now for so long, that the wear can be natural and real, and not "faked" wear.

Might be an interesting gamble at the right price - I'd have to analyze the seller to give a more definitive answer. Frankly though, I'd never buy this card raw off ebay from a scan - Never, unless it was basically like a throw in with a larger lot of cards and I'd bid on the other cards presuming the Mantle is a fake.

Wax stain leads me to believe that it's real. 2. Just my opinion though.

I blew it up to 400% and the black border still looks solid.

Based on the type of wear, poor registration, wax on back and solid ink border - I think it's real.

But, that and 4 bucks and ya got a latte at Starbucks.

    Grade? 2 or maybe 3?

I've seen far worse cards graded 4. But then again they are mostly T206's.
In fact lately I've seen some poor 5's. I'm gonna go for the big bucks and say 4.

Offer to pay for the "Super Express", which guarantees a two-day turnaround. It's only $55 and considering the value, an absolute bargin to know it's legit.

Good luck and keep us posted image

it authentic, the registration is off, that is why you see the colored dots making it appear "bright"...

would grade a PSA 2 IMHO
