Opinions needed - PSA card damaged in shipping

I recently won a 1987 GReg Maddux Topps PSA 10. I thought it was a decent deal for around $12 and $2.50 in shipping. Well, until it showed up! The card arrived in a $.63 white envelope, with a very thin piece of re-used padded envelope around it. This is the first time it has happened to me, but the card WAS CRACKED IN TWO PIECES and the LOOSE CARD WAS BENT IN HALF. I sent the seller a message, and 2 days later didn't get a response, so I opened a PAYPAL dispute. Now the seller respondes with:

"Why the dispute, you got the PSA 10, didn't you"?

Any suggestions? Should I just proceed directly to a claim?

The most annoying thing here is the $.63 white envelope. I did consider the shipping charge in my bid, and would have no problem with it....IF THE CARD CAME IN ONE PIECE!!

It's obvious the dealer is being stubborn, so go through with the Paypal claim, and present pictorial proof of how the card arrived.

I bought some prints and they came damaged. The seller wouldn't respond so I filed a not as described complaint with paypal. When he said that I didn't opt for insurance I responded by telling them that my not buying insurance didn't remove his responsibility to pack them well. They sided with me and I got the refund.

File the claim and keep the packing materials. You might have to send the mess back to him to get your money back, if you do make sure you use delivery confirmation.

  • Continue with claim. It's the sellers responsibility to properly packaged items for shipping. If you bought insurance for this card and it was sent in a pwe, insurance wouldn't have covered it because it wasn't packaged right. Also the item is not as described or not properly described if the seller wants to be a wise guy. Hang it on'em.image
  • I usually buy the insurance if the card is of higher value, but since i have never had problems like this before, i wasn't going to buy it on as $12 card.......anyway, i am sure Paypal will be on my side when they see the packaging pics, etc...

Paypal WILL NOT be on your side as it only does refunds for sales over $25. They will add a strike, for whatever that is worth to the seller, but sellers know that it must be over $25 , before paypal gives a good crap.

May I suggest, either giving the appropriate feedback, or bending over and pretenting you are a non-metro. Your best bet will to take the high road and warn others about this seller.

  • I don't get insurance unless the card value is $30 or higher. Been pretty lucky I guess. I hope I don't run across a moron like you did.
  • Two things: One, Paypal doen't have a $25 minimum that I'm aware of. I had to file a claim against a seler last year for a $15 card that never arrived. He didn't use delivery confirmation and was a total jerk about it...so I won instantly. In your case, it may take you a little while longer, but I'd bet they'd side with you.

Secondly, what is up with all of the lazy sellers out there? Not only do stories like this amaze me, but i've bought really expensive cards lately that have arrived in shockingly crappy packaging. In my opinion, a plain bubble envelope is not sufficient for any card over $5...especially when you hit three digit cards. How hard is it to find used bubble wrap or even an old bubble envelope or cardboard box to cut up and wrap a card? I bought a PSA 6 '48 Leaf Jackie Robinson a month ago that arrived without any kind of internal protection. I blew a gasket. The seller's response was that it was insured and that he rarely has problems with cards arriving safely. I told him that batters are supposed to run their hardest at first base even on a routine ground ball for the same reason. Becaue every great once in a while something can happen and you don't want to be the guy on the losing end of that situation. I'd much rather see a seller take an extra 30 seconds wrapping a card than have to deal with the post office for a claim.

    I'm thinking you won't get a refund.

Paypal has a $25 fee they charge to pursue claims, therefore it has to be over $25 before they will do crap.I've had numerous sellers that sent me a pile of garbage, only to have paypal send their "We're sorry but this doesn't meet our $25 minimum, blah, blah, blan, but remember to buy with confidence as you have buyer protection (Take a good dump ).

Please lets not kid ourselves, paypal collects their fees from sellers, not buyers. They protect their ownkind. Its all about money, not whats right or wrong.

A refund will be be issued.

    Escalate to a claim, immediately.

Send PayPal all of the docs they request; and,
send photos of the junk and the dirtbag's email.

Just another worthless seller, ruining EBAY one sale
    at a time.

ALWAYS fund your PayPal transactions with a credit card.

  • Thing that bugs me about this is that the mail doesn't crack PSA cases. They don't run over their mail with a mail truck. How many negative feedbacks does the seller have? What kind. He's probably a real MF. Let us know who it is so we can avoid the scumbag.

Ebay has the 25 fee, paypal does not charge the 25 fee. File the claim and be done with it. It's not as described.

This assumes that the buyer has not filed more than 1 other claim on an eBay purchase in the last calendar year. If he has, then you're back to the $25 minimum.

So the OP is saying that the PSA case arrived shattered to the point that the card came out of the case bent? Something is not making sense here.
  • that is correct - the case was shattered into 2 pieces right across the middle of the card. The card is bent right along the same line that the case was completely cracked!
  • Also - i will be happy to email dig pics to anyone interested in seeing this destroyed case and card. PM me your email address....I would scan, but scanner is giving problems.

That musta been one hell of a trip to break that PSA casing !

Just takin a wild guess , but I really doubt that was broken during shipping .

Would take one hell of a college try to break that thing .
You could drop it off a 10 story building with no damage , maybe it will chip . .

Stayin tuned to this one . . .

A PSA holder has a real good chance of getting shattered or broken in half if it made it's way into the letter sorting machines. The typical letter goes thru the machines at least 5 times without a human touching it. The address is read by an optical reader, most letters have a bar code sprayed on them, and then get run thru the DPS (delivery point sequence) machine twice.

Bubble mailers that are at least 3/4" are treated as a flat or a parcel and they don't get the same rough treatment.

Stamping "photo do not bend" or "please hand cancel" doesn't do a whole lot of good. Bigger envelopes and bubble mailers have a better chance of getting it there safely.

the guy should refund the money. i have bought many cards off of ebay and this happened to me once with a low end psa 10 and it was in a bubble mailer (not a very good one) and the card came broke in half and the seller sent me a different card to replace it of comperable value.

he should refund or make good on the card. especially with 2.50 for shipping in a white envelope???? that should be theft.

collecting RAW Topps baseball cards 1952 Highs to 1972. looking for collector grade (somewhere between psa 4-7 condition). let me know what you have, I'll take it, I want to finish sets, I must have something you can use for trade.

looking for Topps 71-72 hi's-62-53-54-55-59, I have these sets started

  • I had a similar incident with some raw cards and a plain envelope. All of the cards were bent and dinged. I emailed digi pics of the damaged cards to the seller upon arrival and the seller ignored me until I filed a dispute. To resolve the dispute they agreed to refund the purchase price and the return shipping. The seller refunded my Paypal account for the purchase price but not the return shipping but eBay closed the dispute anyway. Needless to say, I was out the return shipping of which I properly packed the damaged cards and used delivery confirmation. I had to leave negative feedback for the first time since I started buying on eBay in 1998.

I know its not the price of the cards sometimes (in my case ~ $10) sometimes you just have to stand up for the principle of the situation.

    Thanks

If Paypal fails, then you have your CC. With this small amount, your CC may just write off the charge without any questions. I have had small charges I did not make in the past and called up my CC and they just made it disappear.

That's probably what happened. I had someone send me a McNabb #/200 in a single screw screwdown and it showed up in pieces. All together in a plastic bag.
