1893-D 1 Mark, I bought as GEM BU, Arghhhh!

I bid on it because the photo looked pretty good as compared to most eBay pics and the seller has excellent feedback. I paid a hundred bucks including the shipping. In hand it has very little toning (only a little around the rims). Only by looking at it under magnification was I able to decide it was the same coin. It is NOT a GEM BU as advertised but a very nice AU Grrrrrr... I am trying to decide if I should keep it or send it back. These are the sellers pics, and they are what I bought the coin from. According to the 2nd edition Standard catalog of German coins, it is 32.00 in XF and 145.00 in UNC. So I am OK with the price but didn't quite get the deal I was hoping for. (What is current Krause on this)?

Am I an idiot? or would you have bought it as UNC from these pics too?
Thanks for the imput...

Looks pretty good to me from those pics. I would send it back, no reason to be OK with being an unsatisfied customer.

To me that image is indicative of what many flatbed scanners do to coins. The contrast is so blown out as to imply toning or darkness where none exists.

Whenever I see a picture with those characteristics, alarm bells go off...

No one can grade the coin accurately from that image... sorry.

I will say this... some of the German Empire One Mark coins are very underrated in mint state... especially in the early to mid 1890's
