Can anyone tell if this pillar dollar is real or counterfeit?

The coin weighs exactly 27 grams, and the obverse and reverse are in-line. I suspect it is a counterfeit, but I'm no expert.

I'm with you. Although the weight is on, it's either been tooled real heavily or it's counterfeit.

No idea about the origin of that but what is the coin in your avatar?

Ha, ha - I have no idea. It is a stock picture on the PCGS site and I thought it looked kinda neat.

When you put a pic on the internet, you never know. I recently found one of my registry set coins being used in an article in a coin club newsletter.

    Isn't stev32k's icon a US Amazonian pattern?

Yeah, sorry about that. For some reason, my avatar never stays loaded, so this last time, I swiped one that I didn't recall seeing anyone using until I could try and get my own uploaded again.

I'll remove it, now that I see it has a home.

To be honest, I can't say with degree of confidence if the coin is real or not. There are things that make me think fake and things that make me think real. But I will say this, if it is a fake I think it is a very old one, likely contemporary.

    Here's a fake for comparison:

Well, I still don't know. Guess the only way to be sure is to send it in for grading and let the experts look it over.

And this is the reason I am not venturing into pillars, yet. To me, the first one looks authentic, but tooled around the rim. The first one of Steve27's is quite an obvious replica, judging by the dentils and raised rim. The second one looks corroded, but authentic.
