Traveling

We will be traveling from Oregon to Yellowstone, east to South Dakota to the Black Hills and Mt Rushmore. We will be packing the Detector which is brand new. I thought I'd ask all you experienced diggers for any tips or advise as to where we should use or detector? My concerns are; where is it legal to dig and where does one need permission especially near Military or Historial landmarks? You can probably surmise that this is our first real outing with our new toy. Anyway, any advise or tips on where to search would be appreciated!!!
Thanks, Rich

  • Detecting takes time. I find it hard to detect while on a trip. I tend to keep driving.
I would look for an old rest area. When you find a place for the night, look for old school grounds or picnic grounds. Fair grounds...you get the idea. Try to get a hunt in at night and maybe in the AM.

Remember property rights. Don't make a mess, refill all digs.

    Good Luck

  • You're going to be travelling one of the areas that is my family's favorites. We have travelled those areas numerous times. There is a vast amount to see and enjoy. Numerous historical sites are along the way to visit too. Most of them are oriented around the Indian Wars of the 19th century. You'll be crossing the Oregon Trail several times also. Needless to say, you won't be hunting in the Natioanl Parks or historical sites as they are forbidden by law. As Jerry mentioned, probably the best you'll be able to do is hit rest stops. Make sure when you're in the Black Hills to see Crazy Horse too. Not far from there is Deadwood. It's definitely worth spending the day there. Lots of history to suck up!

I saw the Crazy Horse monument about 20 years ago and it was just taking on a recognizeable shape. Has it been completed yet?

    Thanks Jerry.

This is what the face looked like when I was there.

Although far from complete, at least they have made progress image
  • Thanks for posting the link Jerry and pictures Danny. The memorial is far from being finished. But the progress that has been made in the last 10 years is exponential compared to the previous 40. A bit of trivia concerning Crazy Horse - all four heads at Mt. Rushmore will fit into the area of the head of Crazy Horse. My family hasn't been there in 7 years now. But we already have plans for next year to visit again.

I forgot to mention Rocketman, when you're in the Black Hills take a drive through Custer State Park. You might see some buffalo when you are in Yellowstone, but I guarantee you'll be up close and personal with them if you take a drive through CSP. Maybe too close.

Bentfork - we stayed in Chadron a few years back and, after a day in the Hills, were driving back through the park to the hotel. It was about 11PM and there wasn't a moon out, so it was pitch dark other than the constellations.

We come over a rise and there is this HUGE bison sleeping in our lane, facing us and literally taking up all the space. My brother was driving and swerved onto the other shoulder to make sure we didn't hit it, it was that huge. We were probably only going 35 or 40 but it was wayyyy too close for comfort.
  • Yep, I can imagine that was frightening Steve. Probably wouldn't have been good to hit him. Probably would have made him made. Like Mongo. The last time we drove through the park was in late afternoon. The bison were grazing and meandering around. We were in my old VW Beetle at the time. We had to kill the engine and wait until they moved on as they had taken up the road for about a mile. I brought out the camera and started shooting. One of these big, burly, guys comes right up to my driver's window and snorts at us. Snot all over the glass. Priceless! Anyone who hasn't seen a bison up close can't fathom how big they are. But, and I know this has strayed from the thread, the biggest one we have ever seen is on display in the natural history museum in Bozeman, MT. I don't remember the particulars on him, but his hump is higher than I am tall and I go almost 6 foot.

Rocketman, make sure you eat at the Chief Restaurant in Custer. Fantastic buffalo ribeyes and burgers.

Thanks G! You know the Buffallo's are great! However, when in Yellowstone we came accross a herd of about 30 that did not let traffic pass for about 30min. And this was in may when tourism is low! They can be annoying!!!!! Oh well, it is their property! Rich
  • Rich,
They are fascinating creatures. I love to watch them. Seems like everywhere we travel that we see a herd we end up stopping. Enjoy your trip and post some of your finds if you do get a chance to hunt.

If you're near Custer, SD you might want to take the kids to Bedrock, home of The Flinstones.
