Does anyone here collect uncut sheets? (pics of them especially welcome)

The neat thing about uncut sheets is that they're so much rarer than the cards themselves (especially if they didn't "offically release" them, like 1987 Topps was) and make interesting wall decorations; the two 1975 Topps uncut sheets I saw on Ebay were very nice. The problem is that most people (like myself) have no way of displaying/storing them properly (as you know, custom frame jobs don't come cheap). Though I do hope someday to try to get those team checklist uncut sheets Topps did from 1975-82.

I've got several dozen, my oldest is a '34 Goudey which I still need to shoot. Here is a '41 Playball sheet-
    image

I'll try and post some of the others in the next week. I really like them for a variety of reasons- scarcity, eye appeal, and they help give an idea as to why some cards are condition rarities.

Wow, is that a full or partial sheet of 1941 Playball? Either way, I'm sure it didn't come cheap.

Frankly, everytime I see a vintage uncut sheet (especially a full one), I just can't believe such a thing existing on the open market would be possible. Since you'd basically have to be an employee and literally sneak one out the factory w/o getting caught for the sheet to even exist on the open market in most cases, right?

I don't collect them - but have some.

I have a 76T full sheet and a 83T half sheet with Ryno RC - they're wall mounted - so they eat up a lot of space - that's my problem since I don't have tons of wall space.

The '41 is a full sheet.
'41 Playball's were issued on regular cardboard stock. At some point (probably after) the first 24 cards were issued on paper stock, and printed in 2 press runs- cards 1-12 on one sheet, 13-24 on the other. The second one is the most desireable, due to the presence of Ted Williams as well as Greenberg, Cronin, and Ruffing. Mine is the less desireable lower number sheet, but I still like it a lot. It cost just over $400. on ebay a couple of years ago.

  • Not vintage, Not mine but a chance to show it off is what I see. I want it but guy said $1000. Uh I have spent alot on FF but I dont think so. Still kicking myself on the one I passed on that was $40 or so.

Wow, nice stuff guys. I have alot of the uncut sheets from the 80's, you remember them, food products such as jiffy pop, ralston purina, kraft, Sam's, etc. I love food issues and am always searching for what is out there. So far this year, I have only heard of the Pepsi issues.

I save pictures of 1960 thru 1976 uncuts sheets whenever they come up for auction for Baseball, Football and Basketball. Probably only missing 2 or 3 for a complete 70-76 set (of pictures, too cheap to win any), John.

Um, I don't want to sound like I'm asking a stupid question, but how is that sheet (the one with all 1989 Fleer Bill Ripkens) possible? You know, only that card on a sheet? That's not how they usually make card sheets. No wonder that black box version only books for a dime. image

I'm wondering maybe they made all those of one card to get them to replace the obscene one?
  • I don't collect them, because of the room they would take up when mounted, and I'd have to show them off!

Unsure how they made it but they did, and yes to replace the FF that was pulled. The BBox was DP and some price guides note that. (At least I have seen some that do/did)

Thought you might be interested in an uncut sheet up for auction. 1972 Topps football with a 1 of a kind never released color variation of the Staubach Rookie. The sheet is in the Huggins and Scott auction April 2nd and 3rd. Bidding starts March 17th. Came directly from Topps. Back in 1984 I sent away for the '84 Nestle set, which came in, if I recall correctly, four sheets or so. I hung them on my wall and beat them to heck. I wish I would have saved them and never taken them out of the tube, though. image

Here's a link to a gallery with an uncut sheet of 1981 cards of the Rochester Red Wings. Of course this is significant in that it has one of Cal's minor league cards as well as Cal on a checklist. I had the chance to interview the guy who printed them and found out that there aren't that many of them. Only 50 sheets were left uncut, but it sounds like there may be fewer than 25 still in existence. It was pretty cool to get to see in person.

I had the 81 Donruss set in sheet form years ago, sold it though and had a sheet of 91 Topps BB, not sure where that one ended up??
  • Since I moved my pic from my original post it's gone. Here it is again. Not mine and I cannot/wont pay the $1000 price tag that it has. Still in therapy over the one I passed on that ended for $20 ish.

All 132 Black Box. The Black Box was rumored to be the last version made when they damaged the plates enough from scratching them (Black Scribble).
Unsure why they would make a full BBox sheet, unless it was to replace all the saw cut cards they pulled from packout and I can believe this as I have gotten mixed versions in cases so I assume they printed in bulk and cut/packed as needed and had many FF sheets laying around thru the run and inserted the BBox as needed. Though I have yet to get a BBox that was out of place from the 2 collation patterns I have noticed in rack. Unsure on wax or cello or they could of been used for the factory sets as it's assumed those all have BBox. I just dont know.

I use them for concert posters. Ultra Pro makes them, though I've never seen them larger than 18x24. Here's some that are on ebay now:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/25-ULTRA-PRO-18X24-18-X-24-TOP-LOADERS-TOP-LOAD_W0QQitemZ130182266123QQihZ003QQcategoryZ26378QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQ_trksidZp1638.m118.l1247QQcmdZViewItem

One caveat - they're not acid free/archival, so I wouldn't recommend them for long-term storage unless the item is sleeved in mylar first.

Just out of curiousity, how big is a standard 132 card sheet of Topps in inches? I know that was the standard size for a Topps sheet in the 70s/80s but for how long exactly? Apparently 110 card sheets are standard for Topps today.

1969 Topps uncut sheet w/ Mantle

Obviously not for everyone in terms of affordablity (or lack thereof) but I like how not only does the sheet have the Mantle, but also has the complete Pete Rose puzzle back on the back of the eight All-Star cards. They also did this (had a eight card puzzle of a picture on the back of All-Star cards) in 1974 for Bobby Bonds as well (not sure about the years in between).
