Anyone ever see the original 1951 version of "Angels in the Outfield"?

I caught it on Turner Classic Movies a few days ago. First off the plot is schmaltzy as they come, but what was absolutely terrific about this movie is that it was filmed at old Forbes Field in Pittsburgh - which is where I saw the Pirates play from 1967-70. What jumps out at you rightaway is how enormous this field is. The left field foul line is 365 ft. and centerfield goes out to 465 ft. and right center is also 450 ft.+ As an added bonus there about a 20 second cameo by Ty Cobb and another by Joe Dimaggio, plus Bing Crosby, who was part owner of the Pirates at that time. They also used some actual Pirate game footage such as Ralph Kiner hitting a home run. For anyone who enjoyed going to games at Forbes Field, it's definitely a "must-see" film.

  • Barbara Billingsley, Beaver's mom from Leave It to Beaver, has a non-speaking role as a hat-check girl in the hotel.

My favorite B/W baseball movie from the 50s is "Rubarb".

Yeah, she appears in two scenes. Of course her best movie role was in Airplane as the jive translater.
