I won the Shroomdude's giveaway, so as pledged, here is another giveaway of my own! (WINNER: sbeverl

Never mind that I already have a giveaway going for that HK $100 bill. I pledged to do a giveaway of my own if I won Don's, and I just did, so here goes.

In keeping with my current new passion for Roman Imperial coins, this giveaway will be along those lines.

I have a duplicate Constantine I piece which happens to have nice sandy desert patina. The patina on this coin is actually nicer than the one I am keeping for my set, but my other coin was a tad bigger and this is the one I have a picture of, so it is the giveaway piece. I was going to use it as an incentive bonus in my next binder lot sale but I have not had time to deal with any of that yet.

Post here only ONCE to enter the giveaway. If you like, you may also post (in the same message) your reasons for collecting (or not collecting) ancient coins.

FINAL UPDATE

The random.org number generator selected #26.

  • Please enter me. I currently have no ancient coins, but they definitely interest me. I guess I just don't have the necessary knowledge, or the money, to go out and buy some yet.

Please throw my name in the hat.

Why do I collect ancients? I like the history that goes along with the coins.
Plus, if I buy the uncleaned coins, I get to clean them.
This somewhat satisfies my urge to clean coins...image

Well, don't clean this one. That patina is its selling point.

Following your post re: The Lord Marcovan Ancient 80 I noticed that I have a head start with #s 22, 23, and 24 already in my collection.

    22. Septimius Severus, 193-211 [6][3]
    23. Caracalla, 198-217 [6][3]
    24. Geta, 209-212 [7][3]

And not one of them has been cleaned in almost 2 millennia. image

I've never had a Geta. I assume you must have a denarius? (Wait- don't answer me here- more than one post from you will mess up the giveaway). Just bought an AU-ish Caracalla denarius from Aethelred.

    Thanks for the chance!

I decided to follow your example and do the 80 coins, A to Z and maybe learn a little as I go. The reason, as discussed on different posts is my lack of knowledge and the easily obtainable references to what is available and affordable. Your list sounds like a hoot and I can't wait to add a couple of the pieces on "the list" to my little hoard of coins from the world. I gave away my first ancient after being made to feel like an idiot for not identifying it correctly. Time heals all wounds though, and I am willing to stick my neck out there again and try once more (worse case, another YN gets more ancients) and I just stick to my German stuff...

Hey, some of you aren't playing right! image

I don't own any ancients, since I just got into darkside stuff. I may after my interest has peaked in these. But, I do like ancients, because unless you keep dirt and rocks in your house its hard to own anything older!

Is this the giveaway you were talking about on the MD board? Must be. I'd like that just because it's 800 years older than my current oldest coin.

  • Please enter me. I used to collect ancient coins. The junky lots you would see on eBay for uncleaned coins and then I would try to clean them up. Some turned out pretty cool, some didn't. One night when I got done "playing with my coins" as my ex wife used to say, I left them out on the kitchen table as I had stayed up too late already and had to work in the morning. The next day when I got home, they were gone and all I could get out of her was "Well you shouldn't have left them out" Stupid freakin' beotch. And to think, I was dumb enough to stay with her for probably another 4 years after that incident. Anyway, haven't owned an ancient sense.

I believe there is nobody with as many cool little toys as the lm...at least judging from his giveaways.

I hate to sound like an echo (laserart), however, the oldest coin I have is a C1500 Swiss bear coin.

Love to have a "really" old one!!!!image

Rockin give away LM! Count me in please. A cool Constantine coin would go well with the blue symbol in my sigline, which is the symbol that Constantine went to war with as the first Christian Roman Emperor image

I don't collect ancient coins (I own a widow's mite and that's all!), but I enjoy reading and learning about them. Whitman is coming out with some nice books this year and next that will appeal to the ancients community.

  • Awesome coin LM. No need to throw my name in the hat... I've won one of your give-aways before (think it was a mile-stone post give-away, and you sent me a $10 note- thanks again).

I have a nice greeeeeen Constantine coin that I'll need to post. I don't have details about it... my 1st metal detecting sensei found it in England (among many other coins) and gave it to me as a gift. I'm pretty sure it's the oldest coin I own image

Coins got me interested in History as a kid.

Now, my daughter who collects is now more interested in History.

We don't have any ancients as of yet. But I see her interest in ancient History
increasing when we do finally acquire one.

Well, hello Lordmarcovan... would love a genuine piece of ancient history!

Why do I not (yet anyways) collect these intriguing items? Well, because it's hard enough for me to figure out counterfeit coins from the last 200 years... kinda why I don't collect all those really cool fossils with fish & things that I think are awesome- I would be a hopeless dupe!

Yes, from what I've gathered, it was more a political than personal conversion, if there was any conversion at all.

I have always been interested in ancient coins, but did not
