Around 1990, give or take a year or two, my father bought me a Mickey Mantle autobiography that came with the VHS of "Mickey Mantle: The Lost Stories Special Edition." If you have not ever seen this you must do so. I just googled and found it on DVD and ordered one.
The video shows Mickey Mantle as an old man (80?) telling stories, with film and photo highlights. One story he tells is the Billy Martin Shot A Cow Story. Not word for word here, as this is my fifteen year memory of it.
One day Mickey Mantle and Billy Martin went hunting on some land owned by a friend of Mickey Mantle. The two drove up to the land, where the friend also had his house. Before they started their hunt, Mantle left to the tell his friend what they were planning.
His friend was like, "No problem. However there is one thing you can do for me."
"I have an old horse and I need to put it down, but I can't bring myself to it."
Mantle didn't want to, "No I cant do that."
But the friend was persistent, "Really, it would mean a lot to me if you could. I just can't do it myself."
The Yankees were well known for playing tricks on each other, Mantle and Martin were roommates, giving them a good history of pranks on each other.
So Mantle decided to pull a fast one over Martin.
He returns to the car and tells Martin, "Some friend, he won't let us hunt. I'll show him."
Acting all mad he grabs his hunting rifle.
"Calm down Mickey, it'll be all right."
"No, I am going teach him a lesson."
So Mantle grabs the rifle, aims at the horse and shoots. It drops down and suddenly he hears two other shots in the background.
He turns around and Billy Martin is running back to the car telling Mickey, "I just shot one his cows."
Clear Skies,
Mark

collecting RAW Topps baseball cards 1952 Highs to 1972. looking for collector grade (somewhere between psa 4-7 condition). let me know what you have, I'll take it, I want to finish sets, I must have something you can use for trade.
looking for Topps 71-72 hi's-62-53-54-55-59, I have these sets started
So I imagine that is part of the reason I thought he was older....the fact that I was so young when I saw him.
The dealers son also had a print signed, which Mick personalized, and therefore did not charge the extra dollar, but this really annoyed the kid who tore it up later. I bet he regrets that now.
I use to have 10,000-15,000 autographs then along came eBay, and now I just a stay couple hundred or so, but I kept the print.
Here is a photograph of it framed, the print measures 11 x 14, so the signature is quite large. As Mick signed it in front of me and shook my hand I do not have to worry about it being fake, but I guess I will likely never sell it so I guess that doesn't really matter.
The print itself was limited to 400, but only the first 100 were signed.
