1883/2 Shield Nickel - Please Confirm!

Look at the Doubling in the Motto and the filled 8 in the date. I believe this to be a 1883/2 variety.

It's very hard to offer an opinion based on the photos that you've posted, and I don't have my reference materials with me. I wouldn't rely on either the Longacre doubling on the motto or the filled 8 as definitive markers for any variety because they abound in this year (which overdate variety do you think they indicate?). You haven't said whether or not the underlying 2 is visible; and, if you think you see it, where it is located relative to the other digits.

I can say with a high degree of confidence -- approaching certainty -- that your coin is not one of the six recognized 3/2 overdates. Sorry.

Would be much better if you could provide a high-res photo of the date area of the coin. But based on the apparent date position, I am reasonably confident that you do not have an 1883/2.

Motto doubling is extremely common on 1883s, as are filled 8s. They are useless as die markers for 1883/2.

P.S. At least your coin *is* an 1883, not an 1882 with a filled 2 like most people claim as an 1883/2.
