Does anyone else here like or collect the Ultra Gold/Platnium Medallion cards?

I already have the 1995 Ultra Gold Medallion set and I think I might like to try to get the others too (just the Gold sets only, I don't think it's realistically possible to make Platnium sets). I believe they (now Upper Deck) still does these Gold/Platnium Medallion sets, right? Does anyone else here like these sets too?

Also, do they still do the 1/1 Ultra Masterpieces?

  • I'm a big fan of the Ultra product and also have all those sets and insert sets in baseball and football. I stopped building the gold medallion sets because I didn't see any value in it. The photo was the same as the regular. It just didn't "Float my boat". There was one year though (i don't remember which), where the Gold medallion cards were different from the regular cards in football. I sell off the platinum cards to player collectors.
Ultra/Upper Deck still include gold medallion and platinum medallion cards in their packs. Unfortunately the picture is still the same as the regular card.

I did some research on that using our resident Will Clark collector's homepage; they only did the different photos for 1997. Starting in 1998 is when they did their distinctive gold/platnium background/feel which continues today. Though I think 2000 is the only year they were die-cut. Do you know if they still do their purple 1/1 Masterpieces or not?

I guess the value in the Gold sets is that starting in 1996, the Ultra set design gets rather dull and repetitious, but the Gold sets are much more interesting and more "limited edition" than the standard issue set, yet are still quite affordable on Ebay for the most part. Remember, I got my 1995 Ultra GM set for about the book value of the standard set.

PM me if you have any of your sets for sale.
