1996 ASE question

I looked at the pricing for the ASE's for all the years they have been minted and the 1996
coins have considerably higher prices than the other years. This is because of the low
mintage, right? Any other reason for this price anomaly?

If there are no other considerations (except for the grades, of course), how much would
be a good price for a roll (20) of them? If still in a shotgun roll, is there a premium?
If stored in a plastic tube, would you pay less? I'm not gonna have a lot of time to look
at these coins, and I don't think I'll be able to tell the difference in a 65 or above.
Can you expect to get a minimum grade out of unopened rolls? (i.e. MS62 - MS 65)?

I'm looking to buy several rolls and then resell them for a profit. (hopefully)
Any suggestions or hints for success are appreciated.

Thanks,
Big Dave

  • Expect to pay about $900-$1000 for an original roll from a green monster box. I would not buy them individually or opened tube unless I could inspect each coin for spotting. I try to buy them from dealers in the southwestern US.

There is a premium because it is the lowest minted year, however the '94 and '97 are close and have virtually no premium. I expect collectors to eventually ditch the '96 premium or add premiums to the other low mintage years.

Most will grade between 68 and 69 right out of the green monster box. None will grade 70 at PCGS, so submit them to NGC. If there's spots, don't bother getting them graded. You'll need to do better than sorting 65's, because they're all going to be better than 65's. You need to cherrypick the perfect coins. Either way, in NGC 69 holders they go for about $100.

Do you trust the seller? If so, they should be in the plastic tube they came in (green top) and not a "shotgun" roll. If in anything but an original plastic tube that they came in, I would be more cautious of a picked through roll (may be good...picked out good ones...but most likely, picked over roll).
Most should grade out MS67 or higher (most MS68/69).

Beware of spotting...that is the killer on these.

A good roll will be $1000+.

It is the lower mintage that pushes the price on these.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Okay. Let's say I can buy a roll of all 69's. $1000 for the roll.
I believe that there are auction fees. About how much are they?
A percentage? Uh, let see... gas for there and back and there
will be sales tax as well, right?

  • Assuming you sell the coin on ebay for $120, you could expect to pay a final value fee of about $4.40. If you use Paypal, expect another $3.50 in fees, and your eBay insertion (or listing) fee of around $1.10-$2.00 give or take, depending on the options you pick when listing it. So, about $10 in auction fees. You also have to pay NGC grading fees--$12.50 per coin under the 12 day modern.

You can expect to get about $120 for a NGC MS69, $3500-$4000 for a MS70, and about $55 for a MS68. So, if you're paying $50 per coin raw, you will need your coins to grade MS69 or better to turn a profit.

I really appreciate your time and the answers you've provided.
One last one - does the NGC grading price you mentioned include
    shipping & handling?

    Any other hidden costs?

  • $12.50 is without S/H.

Also, you'd have to ship the coins. Figure gas to and from the PO, packaging, time and effort, etc.

Just because they are in a green cap mint tube doesn't mean that they haven't been searched/picked over.
