Check out this slightly disturbing medal I picked up...

Actually, I'm still waiting for delivery, but thought I would share the pics I have. I picked this up for my international (and national) birth year set, and haven't seen an example before this one. I think the hands coming out of the mushroom cloud are creepy, but the two naked guys fighting is just... uh... strange...

That is great - really innapropriate on many levels, and both sides of the coin - amazing.

Looks like it could be from an anti war protest. In 1970 there were many protests around the country.
But that one looks like it could be from France. LOL

Just think, the Franklin Mint was created to mint these medals for the National Commemorative Society.

My Rulau and Fuld books pretty much quit at the year 1900, Is there a book that has more modern tokens/medals in it like this item?

The obverse is a little scary with the hands coming out of the ground. The reverse made me laugh a little. Its actually real funny. Nude guys with only helmets? The dude on the ground looks like he most definately is coming to the abandonment of force.image
  • This definitely calls for an image of Dr. Strangelove !!!!!!

Only "slightly disturbing"? As an anniversary of the end of our second world war, I find it quite bizarre and twisted.
What is the standing guy doing with his right hand anyway? I'd be covering up too.

Before ex NJ Gov McGeevey ( sp ? ) was Governor of NJ, I believe he was President of the " Global Alliance Against Weapons Assisted War Attrocities " - GAAWAWA. The aim of this group was to disarm and disrobe all military combatants. Global conflicts would be decided by a single representative from each country, before a shreiking crowd of GAAWAWA members in a Biker-Leather bar in the Cuban Embassy in San Francisco.

The pictured medal was a "challenge coin" carried by members of GAAWAWA. The helmets were just an artistic device added to convey a military / combat related theme.

There is a good chance, the medal may actually belong to ex-Gov McGeevey. It is rumored that Mrs McGeevey absconded with the Coin after a slight domestic situation, and hurled it into the Delaware Bay. She was said to have been so angered that her husband was about to step down from the Governorship that she may have had Herculean strength that resulted in the Coin making it all the way to Delaware.

    Lots of eBayers in Delaware.

They aren't both naked. One is still wearing his helmet.

It is pretty disturbing. You can see that the designer and committee that issued it were just a little short of artistic understanding. Yes, symbolism works and so do nudes.....well for personifying ancient deities. At least it wasn't done in high relief.
