1914 matte proof question and pictures.

What are some identifiers for the 1914 matte proof lincoln.I just bought a 1914 Lincoln that is probably just a business strike,but it has square rims and a somewhat grainy surface.I can't get pictures close-up enough for you tell tell for sure,but here are the best I have.

  • Obverse- Early Die State: Die chip above first 1 in date. Die polish above WE and around LIBERTY.

    Obverse- Late Die State: Die chip above first 1 in date. Heavy die polish under chin.

    Yep, what 50cents said. My 1914 MPL is an early die state. Here are some close up pics.

    I agree that this is not a matte proof. There is a wonderful source for MPL diagnostics in the form of the Counterfeit Detection guides, volumes I and II, printed by the ANA. These are long out of print and were published in the mid-1980s. However, Stack's had previously handled this issue and they were selling them for about $10-$15 each. Since the Stack's/ANR merger, though, their book selection has really been reduced. Additionally, David Lange has repeated much of this ANA information in his newer book on Lincoln cents.
