I am going to view a collection for sale on Sunday-Cards listed

A buddy of mine wife works with the guy who wants to sell. I am hoping that we will be able to hook up tomorrow afternoon so I can see tha cards first hand. We have talked on the phone a few times.

He sent me a spread sheet, so I thought I would post it here. He is asking $1000 for the collection. On paper it seems like a good deal (at least to me it does) however I am not sure what condition the cards are in.

He describes them as "Excellent", but I have a feeling that his idea of excellent is different from mine.

Here is a list of the cards:

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

    Good luck Bunker.

That's a lot of stuff - price is good - condition will tell?

I'll be watching for your report.

  • I'm sure that condition is critical on those cards, but it sure looks like a good deal- if you pass on them, tell him to let me know. LOL!

    Rick,
He does state that the Ryan rookie is poor and his collection is fairly extensive so perhaps his condition estimate is close. The 70's sets alone are worth pretty much $1000. It would be hard to go wrong with this batch IMO.

Good luck Bunker. Hoping his idea of 'excellant' is indeed different from yours, but higher.
If condition is great on even a couple of the key cards he listed it would be a great deal.

He has listed: "Conion Collection- about 200 cards+"

I hate asking stupid questions but what is that? Is it a player or manufacture or neither? image

Conion Collection were those vintage looking cards that came out around 1990. They wre kinda pricey at the time, likely worthless now.

Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.

That is also a misspelling, it is Conlon Collection.

    Wow !!
I'd jump on it in a minute .
No doubt condition is critical but for anyone who collected that many sets, hgow bad could they possibly be , unless he left them in the basement and the basement got flooded and they are now dried and curled and all screwed up .
I would tend to think anyone that collected that many , took care of their investment .
Let us hear the good news .

That to me sounds like someone selling their fathers set or something . . . I'd never sell it for a G

No update other than he bailed out for our Sunday meeting. I am hoping that we can try again one night this week.

Good luck - if the condition is overall there, sounds like a solid deal.

Well I finally had a chance to view the cards and I passed on the deal. There were no gradable cards from the 50's and only a handful from the 60's.

I was hoping tp flip the 50's and 60's and upgrade my sets from the 70's, but most of the cards were EX or worse. I was pretty disapointed image

Well, if you have to look at 50 crap collections to find the diamond, you just knocked one off the list.

  • Yeah let us know how it goes, but id say go for it, but see what he actually meant by excellent.

    Good that you passed.

Never buy something that you cannot at least double
your money on; you will end up broke, if you disregard
    that maxim.

When I go to look at "collections," I always take a box
    of PSAs with me. I show the owner what a 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
really look like. The concept of "excellent," means something
totally different to most folks than it does to us.

Sorry that it was a miss, bunker.

However, the misses make the hits that much better image
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

Really a "typical" lot of baseball cards these days for that type of presentation. The card collection has most likely already been to a number of local card dealers and they cherry picked the key cards and bought them. The dealer may have made an offer on the commons but nothing close to what the seller expected. So the seller winds up with exactly what is there - of some value of course but not nearly what the seller expects or wants.

Good way of looking at it.

Rick--you're going to find that diamond--just takes a little time.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?
