$500 in halves from my Credit Union

This was different than my expectations.

They came loose in a canvas bag.

My kids had fun diving through "Daddy's treasure"

We quickly found 9 40% and one 1964 Kennedy halves.

One foreign coin (Tiu Kronur Island 1984 surrounding a Norse-ish looking coat of arms on one side and 10 KR with four fish on the other)

I think the halves only added up to about $490 so a bunch of change was in the bag as well. (!) I'm pretty sure the change puts the total amount over $500.

Maybe 30 of the halves appear to have been chromed.

I have a business trip to the Boston area so in the bag they will sit until I get back.

  • Congrats on what you found.

That last couple $500 boxes I have gotten from my bank are tough going. I found one coin...one 1967 in the whole lot. I have also found a bunch of gold plated looking ones that I set aside in a previous lot. Any idea on those?

Silver coinage is very hard to come by now a days. Congrats!!
    Love the 1885-CC Morgan
  • One minor update:

I am slowly going through the halves and spending them.

I just found a 1987-D. Someont out there spent a half that came only in mint sets. I bet the spender got the half from a relative who died and the spender didn't know or care what they were spending.

Most folks I give the halves to when I make a purchase assume they are dollar coins. A few roll their eyes and take them. A couple have told me they haven't seen any for years and like them.

This coin is from Iceland. "Island" is how they spell their country's name. It's a 10-kronur piece, as you probably figured.

Edit to add: "Norse-ish", indeed. Iceland has much Norse history, of course. Iceland and the USA issued joint commemorative coins honoring the Leif Ericson millennium in 2000.

  • I'm half way through a box and have found 1 silver so far. I also found this nice 1 which gave me a good laugh.

Dang. Glad I quit halves when there were only 15-20 silver's per box.
