Do NGC pics make a coin look worse than they really are?

AnkurJAnkurJ Posts: 11,370 ✭✭✭✭
I sumbitted 5 coins to NGC last month, and got my results as well as pictures of them via email. One of the coins is a 1885 o toned Morgan. The pictures that NGC sent made the coin look really bad and scratched up. While the coin does have contact marks, they are not as bad as NGC made them seem. And I know its hard to photograph toned coins, but if they are charging for it, they should get it right. I know other grading servies do a good job of this (ahem ahem). So I took a pic myself (just so its clear, I AM an amature at this), and the NGC pic is below. The coin has nice red, pink, green toning with hints of blue. Do you think im right...or..well...Maybe im crazzzzzzzzzzy ;-) (Insert Gnarles Barkley tune)

Edit: i will try to reshoot a pic this weekend

Yeah, I like their photo better, but I really am not a fan of NGC or their slabs. The white background and the blobs in the plastic are real turn offs for me.

    To each, their own.

I think that NGC photo could be better but it's already a lot better than most I've seen.

I've typically seen NGC photos for white silver coins which are washed out and make the coins look flat IMO.

NGC still has a ways to go before they can rival TrueView.

Ngc photos are terrible IMO. I agree with some of the previous posters that this one is better than most.

I like the softer lighting that NGC used when taking the picture of your coin. I think they did a good job of showing the true look of the coin. Cool looking toner image

The NGC picture really isn't good--the lighting was done very poorly. Unfortunately, NGC pics are almost always like this--not worth it.

Pic sucks, but I'm curious what grade they gave it?

I have rarely been pleased with the ones I received in my deluxe photoproofs. Don't like the brevity of the write-ups either, which is why I haven't done any more for a long while.

The NGC pic is okay at best.

This obverse was shot with a 6 year old, Fuji Fine Pix 2650, 2.0 MP

NGC could do a better job.

Actually the NGC pics look better than ones posted previously. They may actually be using a camera instead of a scanner!!
