Proof 1890 Liberty "V" Nickel

This was the topic of my whining session awhile back when I discovered the hairlines on what was sold to me as a "no problem" Proof.

It is currently listed on ebay under my jmski52 moniker:

If you look closely in the right light, you can pick out the hairlines. Maybe I'm being too picky, or maybe I am too used to Platinum Proofs, but having bought it as it was misrepresented by **ron60coins**, it holds no attraction. If it sells for more than the $225.00 I paid him, I might cut him some slack. Here is your chance to bail him out!!

It's now offered on fleabay with a minimum starting bid of $100.00, but I expect it to go a bit higher. Maybe I'm all wet - who knows......

100 yr. old proofs almost always have some hairlines except in 65ish or higher, even then you might see some minor ones..and you're right about comparing them to modern proofs....No comparison. What was the estimated grade?

    What was the estimated grade?

No grade was given in the auction when I bought it. There are a few minute contact marks on both obverse and reverse, but none are distractions. The hairlines are only visible under magnification, or in a digital photo, such as the one shown here.

I really can't grade this classic crap, because I would knock it down like EAC tends to do, whereas today's grading standards would tolerate some things.

Hiyo - thanks for the linky.
