would you want a PSA 7 or this PSA 9 OC of a '52 Bowman Lge. #1 Norm Van Brocklin?

Would you desire this PSA 9 OC, or would you prefer a PSA 7, of this rare card?

I would rather have the (OC), but because
of the way the market works, I would want
to pay a little under 7 money for it.

I would rather wait for a good 8 to come up NQ, but I would rather the 7 over an OC 9

    I'd go with a centered 7 too.

On older vintage (and I would count '52 in this category), I'm going with the 9 OC. My logic is this, esp. for a #1 card like this: where these cards are supposed to be so condition-sensitive, to obtain a grade of 9 means the corners have to be pretty much perfect. There are so few cards which have survived in PSA 9 shape from this era, and I don't need to explain the whole phenomenon of #1 cards with rubber bands, etc. So for this reason, I would take the PSA 9 OC on this card over a PSA 7.

I just recently bought a T-202 Ty Cobb in PSA 5 MC for less than a PSA 2 goes for. This is a no-brainer in my opinion. For the corners, surface, etc. to survive in excellent shape for nearly 100 years but have 95/5 centering (just like it did in 1912), I'll take that over a card with creases, rounded corners, etc.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm more tolerant of centering on vintage than condition, since I feel it is so much more difficult for these cards to survive intact with great corners and edges. Just my two cents....

I'm on the fence. It depends on how badly o/c the card is and how raggedy the corners are on the PSA 7. A fairly sharp, high-end, and centered PSA 7 is a different story. I'll take the 7 all day.

I would take a PSA 9 oc if the centering was close to 70/30 however. I'll pass on the 10/90 centered PSA 9 o/c's.
That Van Brocklin is a little too o/c for my tastes. I would take a centered psa 7 in that case.

It all depends on the eye appeal to me.
  • I'd take the 9 (OC). Relatively poor centering doesn't bother me so much, and since it carries a '9' grade otherwise, it's an otherwise exceptional card.

I have a few instances of this in my collection -- I have some cards where I have both a PSA 8(OC) and a PSA 6. In most cases, I consider the 8(OC) part of my best set, and the 6 is a dupe. Many 8(OC)s are centered well enough to get a straight 6 grade, but aside from centering look like an 8...

It seems like I'm in the minority on this, though.

The pop report shows 16 unqualified PSA 7's, and only 2 PSA 9's (1 NQ and 1 OC). So the PSA 9 grade is obviously far tougher to obtain. Give me the PSA 9 OC please.

    nicely centered 7 for me.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • Some OC's can be attractive, but the one in question is an extreme OC. In this case I would rather have the centered 7 hands down.

If you're asking would I pay more for that particular card in a 9OC holder or in a straight 7 holder, I would pay more for the 9OC (though not much). However, I would much rather own a well centered 7. With some cards/brands/years, centering is a notorious issue and finding a high grade OC card is to some perfectly acceptable. Then there are those that would much rahter find that rare centered copy instead. To each his own. Sometimes it just comes down to the money. Some of these high grade OC cards will still get a nice premium over a straight 7. The Registry guys usually play the other way and want the nicer card for a lower price, which I can understand as well. Eye appeal to many is far more about centering than it is about edges and corners.

Finding a card like that in 9 quality, albeit off center, is still a great find. 55 years old and it has great color, razor sharp corners and perfect edges. Even when it was fresh outta the pack it was OC. 55 years of existence changed nothing else about that card.

I would rather have a 7 over that card. If the 9 oc was just slightly out of tolerance , I would prefer the 9 oc but this one is way to far off.
