COIN WORLD, BETH DEISHER AND THE ANA

I know that many of you are not too happy with Beth and how she is handling the various ANA issues each week in Coin World. I just received the April 30th issue and again there are a number of articles about this subject. Her editorial again "was on target" for me. It centers on two current points. (1) The attempted resignation of Brian Fanton from the board with the ANA refusing to accept it until sometime later and (2) The potential Kagin / Manley expulsion hearing. These comments were written as a real life drama from a comedy tragedy play. Beth even provides possible different scenarios for this "play".

When I read about the "goings on" in Coin World and Numismatic News each week I have a real sense of sorrow. Sorrow because I tend to believe what is being written. I wish I could just ignore it and accept what the current board and leadership of the ANA is doing or attempting to do. I think they started off on the wrong foot when THEY decided to remove Walt Ostromecki from his elected seat on the Board without a VERY GOOD explanation as to WHY to the membership that elected him. Other events followed and most have been negative to the ANA leadership in my opinion.

And so now the membership has a chance to express whether they are FOR the way the leadership has run the organization during the past two years or whether they are AGAINST the way it has been run. The choice to express this is simple to me. I know that the candidates for President and Vice President are unopposed and will be elected to those offices. I know that three current members of the Board of Governors are running for reelection and one former member, but husband of a current member is also running. I will not vote for any of those four people and I will also not vote for President or Vice President this year. That leaves 12 remaining candidates from which I will chose 7. If the majority of the membership choses to vote in a similar fashion it will send a very powerful message to the ANA. If the vote this year reaches over 10,000 (it is usually around 5,000) it too will send a powerful message. I want to hear the platforms and positions of those 12 candidates I am willing to support in this election. To all ANA members who read these boards. Keep informed and then please vote in June. I believe it is very important to the future of the ANA.

I for one applaud Beth's editorials. Who's not happy with them?

Steve - On Monday, April 23rd, Beth Deisher, Editor of Coin World, sent a questionnaire to all of the candidates, including yours truly. I have already completed mine and have sent it to her. So that the other candidates can respond on their own and not try to one-up me, I am not going to divulge my responses until the copy that it will be printed in (which is the June 4th issue).

Lest we not forget that not only is Ms. Deisher and her staff from CW are uncovering the controversies of the ANA but Dave Harper and his staff at NN are doing the same. AND GOD BLESS THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't care for them as I find them irrelevant or simply re-hash what is in the major article in that week's issue, without much editorializing.

I did like her editorial in the April 30th issue because she actually provides a useful analysis.

  • The ANA as a whole disappoints me. As long as they continue to endorse eBay with their logo and eBay allows SGS to continue listing questionable auctions they are just co-conspirators in my view.

    Rick & Michael,
I too happen to agree with most of what Beth and Dave write about the ANA. I think they are doing an important function as part of the media by providing facts as they determine them. I only wish that the ANA leadership could have COMMUNICATED better with the membership to express their positions on all these issues. Their lack of credible responses is why, in my opinion, we are where we are in perceptions about the ANA and its leadership.
