Thanks to another collecting friend, I have completed my 60th vintage/semi-vintage set with each card PSA 8 or better--1961 Fleer Football.
I was down to just 3 cards in this set when I got an e-mail from Paul Howard(aka Wolfbear) who proposed a trade where he would give me the 3 PSA 8s I needed(Jones, McIlhenny and Youngelman) and a replacement 8 for a PSA 9 card I had. We shortly agreed on a deal and I am pleased to have another set down.
Paul ranks 6th in the 1961 Fleer rankings and has a number of impressive football sets including 1964 Topps where he ranks 2nd and 1962 Fleer where he is 1st with a highly impressive 8.70 Set Rating. Thanks again Paul!
The set is now complete with a 8.18 set rating(5th) and I will let it rest at this level. The set has 185 psa 8s and 35 psa 9s. Winning a highly coveted Top 3 slot in the Olympics seems too much of an undertaking given how far the Top 3 are ahead of me. With the dangerous MOSH, collector extraordinaire Fuzzdude and the always unpredictable Couldabeena lurking its best to pause here.
Like many sets, I submitted the bulk of this set raw and have filled in the holes and upgraded as I went along. I consider Youngelman(pop 12 in psa 8 with 4 higher), Rick Casares(pop 9 with 2 higher) and Stan Jones(pop 9 with 3 higher) to be the toughest 8s in the set. For the 1960-63 Fleer run I need to upgrade 2 cards to complete to an 8 or better run--the 1962 Billy Lott(pop 5) and the ultra-tough 1960 Fleer Jim Woodard(pop 1 in 8 with 1 9 and no 7s).
My goal continues to be 100 sets in psa 8 or better with an interim goal of 70 sets by year-end 2007. I am also attempting to finish a few sets in mainly psa 8 with a few 7s as an interim step to an all 8 set.

Quite an accomplishment.
Congrats!
collecting RAW Topps baseball cards 1952 Highs to 1972. looking for collector grade (somewhere between psa 4-7 condition). let me know what you have, I'll take it, I want to finish sets, I must have something you can use for trade.
looking for Topps 71-72 hi's-62-53-54-55-59, I have these sets started
Congratulations on another top set. It makes us all pale in comparison.
"collector extraordinaire Fuzzdude" is priceless. The funniest thing I have heard in weeks.
Wolfbears 62 Fleer set though is not funny. It is as serious as a heart attack. I believe that should be vinatge set of the year. It gets my vote again this year.
Fuzz
Absolutely agree on Wolfbear's 62 Fleer Set--one of the best vintage football sets on the registry.
Jim
This is awesome. I look forward to hearing more finished sets in the future. Thanks for sharing.

P.S. Send me an email with your address again and I will send you a card that you need.
Don't believe Davalillo for a second when he says "we shortly agreed on a deal."
Negotiating with Jim over a few pieces of cardboard
gets as contentious as any wrangling that goes on behind the scenes in Congress.
Thanks for the kind words on my 1962 Fleer set Fuzz.
Need to scan and add the rest of the cards and hopefully add some short comments soon.
The Fuzz is indeed a collector extraordinaire.
He'll lie dormant like a hibernating bear for periods of time, and then strike with a sudden ferocity!
Congrats, and keep it going Jim! Glad we could help each other out ...
"How about a little fire Scarecrow ?"
Congrats again on putting another notch in your belt!!! Absolutely astounding!!!
Wolfbear,
Thanks for clearing up the REAL story behind the makings of a low pop deal with Jim!! Somehow I knew that it wasn't a "this is what I want in return" and "OK!" type transaction!!!

Always looking for 1972 O-PEE-CHEE Baseball in PSA 9 or 10!

Congrats on another set completed! I've always loved the 1961 set - it's a very clean design with a great lineup of rookies and stars. Good luck on your quest to 100!

Paul suggested a trade and I said "is that all you want" and offered to throw in a couple more 9s. After some convincing Paul shortly accepted.
Seriously, I accepted the 2nd offer Paul made--it just took me a little while to see the light.
Thanks again Paul--now please get to work and find me a Lott.
Jim
Also, congrats on picking up the PSA 7 1953 Bowman football Gillom card to complete your 53 set. Very impressive to compete a 53 set in all 8's with only 1 seven. The 7 you bought looked nice too.
I could be waiting a long time for an 8 to appear so I thought I better grab the 7 while I could.

Not that much work involved in opening up my 'available duplicates' cabinet, Jim.
As always, I enjoy the back and forth.
Hopefully a deal can get done soon with my 'extra' 1962 Lott in PSA 8 involving your 1961 Horning card ...
"How about a little fire Scarecrow ?"
For the Lott, the Hornung might have a new home.
I don't know--I hear PSA 9s don't hold up well in Washington's rainy climate.
