It is difficult. You have to ride a thin line between screwing yourself by grading too harshly and turning off potential customers by the title of the listing itself, or grading right on spot and getting a pissed off customer that expects above and beyond.
The way I grade when listing cards raw, is to grade them as if I didn't own them - objectively. It's human nature if it's your card and you want to sell it, all of a sudden that "little wrinkle" could tend to be ignored in the description. Well objectively, it can't be ignored. I describe the cards that way and have never received a neg or a neutral.
Your guy is probably just a jerk. Some people have such little control over their lives outside of Ebay. There's an entirely different group out there that have way too inflated expectations for their collection. You want to just shake them and say "99.99% of this junk will never have any value". Collectibles happen by accident. I've heard people gripe about the condition of BCDP Gold Cards. They're decoy cards for goodness sake!

Yup.
Stamps, Coins, Currency, Comics, Cards;
all now too risky to sell raw.
Stamps are the worst. The buyers are either
total psychos or complete rip-off scamsters.
He has that backstabbing postive feedback thingy down pat.
I dont know how you guys who sell alot put up with crap like that, that would get to me eventually
