Descrepancy between Beckett PSA values and PSA's OPG

Just curious as to what you guys think about the difference between the reported card values of graded cards on the PSA OPG and the reported values in the back of Becketts price guide. For the most part I collect for personal reasons but you can't help but want to know what your investment is worth on the open market. I see big value differences between PSA Gem Mint 10's reported on the OPG in comparison to Becketts book. I've also noticed that PSA 9's are valued here about the same as a the raw card value according to Becketts pricing.

Getting back into to collecting after a 15 or so year break I find myself a bit out of the loop on pricing these days. Your .02 is appreciated.

Use Ebay prices realized or vintagecardsprices.com for better and more accurate pricing data.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • I didn't even know ebay had a price guide. I'll look into both thanks.

I think he meant completed auction results.

MS meant do a "completed listings" search via eBay.
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
  • alright alright I got it lol. That vintage price place is based on auction sales and seems to be a closer answer to what I'm looking for. Thanks for the heads up it should prove helpful. I guess the days of beckett as the "source" for pricing are slipping past us. Is there anything else you would recommend to someone that is fresh back into the market.
  • I dont think Beckett was ever TOO accurate. Too many variables. I wish in 1987 I could of sold a 87 Topps Will Clark for $4. I mean theres reigonal pricing differences, how the player is up to the moment doing, current amount of buyers and sellers of that card on that day, exact condition etc...

I think the best way to find the value is completed sales and price guides then average it. But like mentioned before even that is not always correct.

Beckett Book 89 Fleer Bill Ripken Black Box High Book $5 -I would love to sell them at that. The average sale is $1

Beckett Book for the 89 Fleer Ripken White Scribble is $25. I would buy alot if I could find them at that price

  • Since vintagecardprices.com does this for us automatically I assume the consensus is to sign up there for anything 89 or older.

Is there any place that offers that same type of service for the new stuff or am I stuck doing single name or set searches via the ebay search engine? You guys have been helpful thanks.

I frankly think there is generally way too much new stuff to have any definitive guide, other than Ebay completed sales as a reference.

I mean -- when you have a single set of cards that has thirteen different parallel sets, I think you end up with way too many modern cards to have any definitive pricing that works across the board.

  • I just did some random completed listing searches. How far back do they save those? I only seem to find a limited amount.
