1801 1c , will this grade at PCGS??

I don't see any signs of corrosion, but is it cleaned?

  • I'm by NO means an expert on old copper but don't the fields appear to be all "pocky"? If so, it looks like old corrosion damage to me.

I would say 50% chance of that slabbing, 50% chance of either "environmental damage" or "questionable color." I have seen worse in PCGS plastic, but you never know. I would not submit an S-223 in that grade for slabbing, personally, unless I had a Registry set going. It's just not a rare coin in that grade, and most collectors would crack it out of the plastic soon after purchasing it anyway.

I see no reason to slab it. No real opinion on PCGS.
