  • Compared to the dynamic designs of Washington and Alaska, the Hawaii quarter looks boring to me...

I liked the one with Diamondhead, but it will do.

Haha, though you won't easily find cans of "Hawaiian Punch" in Hawaii. Probably for the same reasons why Pizza Hut in Hawaii doesn't offer "Hawaiian" Pizza, i.e. the one with pineapple chunks.

I think the problem with Diamond Head is it's too much of a Waikiki/Oahu tourist destination and doesn't speak to people on the other islands.

While the King Kamehameha statue is also on Oahu, it probably speaks to more Hawaiians than Diamond Head because he was King of all of Hawaii.

How artisiticly daring to include an outline of the state in the design! Unprecedented! Stunning! It makes my heart soar! I love state outlines!
  • ShamikaShamika Posts: 18,785 ✭✭✭✭

How utterly pathetic. I bet this board could come up with 20 designs before sun down that anyone who cares about coin designs would prefer over the design selected. Has anyone from Hawaii have any creativity left?

Is there something about governors that compells them to find state outlines aesthetically pleasing?

Either that or they haven't bothered looking at all the other "state outlined" quarters floating around.

Yes, If we didn't have the outline, most mainland residents would get confused thinking Hawaii was part of the continental U.S.image

It's about the only thing sufficiently politically neutral that a governor can get behind without upseting some segment of voters.

The biggest mistake of the SQ program is letting politicians have any say in the designs in the first place.
  • At least the designs are consistently mediocre. Consistency is good. Or would this be considered a "foolish consistency?"

All the proposed designs are recycled from Hawaiian municipal trade dollars and medals issued from the 1970s to the 80s. None of them are artistically daring.

I don't understand that. It looks like a Roman soldier/gladiator. What does that have to do with Hawaii?

It's King Kamehameha. Here's a picture of the statue of him that is depicted on the coin:

I believe that if this coin gets issued, it will only be the second monarch to appear on a US coin. (Trivia: name the first.)

Read about the King Kamehameha Statue. King Kamehameha is the founder/unifier of Hawaii. If you have no idea what it has to do with Hawaii, then maybe it's a good design that will help people learn about Hawaii.

Not really. Lots of people don't care for lots of coins out there. The SHQ program is designed to teach people about the states. Not everyone will be a willing student image

I guess I should agree it's bad that you don't care. It may be better to say it's not surprising some people, including many Americans, won't.

Still the second monarch, but merely his second appearance.

  • Total garbage. No detail, no meaning; worthless. Stick figure coin. Governor should be impeached, the coins should be mass melted in a pit of hellfire, and a new design minted instead.

If he was pointing the other way, it could be seen as flipping off the US which is how many Hawaiians feel image

Getting screwed out of your land by foreigners is a serious matter but the quarter would still be funny.

I thought most literature refers to the figure on the Hawaiian commem as just a generic "native chief." Is it established that he is Kamehameha on that coin?

I don't know why, but I find this statement pretty funny.

The old Franklin Mint set of bicentennial state medals had some excellent designs. Too bad the current artisans didn't look at those.

Did the design narratives chosen by Hawaii allow use of designs similar to the Franklin Mint's?
