Question on 2005 and later slabbed coins, Satin Finish vs Circ Strike

My understandind when these came out was that in order to get the SF designation the TPG required that the coin must be received still sealed in the mint packaging. If not then no SF designation. How can one tell that a coin not graded SF is not just an SF coin sent in removed from the mint packaging. Some of these I see online look SF to me. And trying to find these low dollar moderns at shows is tough. An diagnostics?

Thanks,
Mike

Mike, Quite the opposite is true. PCGS will grade these dates with any doubts of SF vs. BS going to the SF designation, especially in high grade. No need to send SF examples in Mint packaging as 95% of the time the differences are obvious to Modern graders and expert amateurs!! If you are looking at SF PCGS slabs I would guess that 99% are correctly identified as such. The high grade Business strike coins in high grade are the tough ones to find as the pop reports indicate. You are probably right about finding low dollar moderns raw. Many traditional dealers won't pay $5 for a roll of 2007 Nickels for example so they sell mint SF examples normally. PM if you have any questions as finding true Business strike dealers/collectors is tough these days.

Thank you Manorcourtman for the info. It looks like my chances would be faily good online.
