Is PCGS being very tight on toned coins right now?

At the Santa Clara show a well known dealer in type said that a lot toned coins are being bagged or won’t cross and that this is not a good time to submit toned coins for grading or cross over. Of course I heard this AFTER dropping off my grading submission at PCGS. image

Can anyone else here confirm or refute this from personal experience?

If true it could be good—AT coins will no longer be slabbed and the doctors will have to move on to something else.

Or it could be bad—more original coins will get dipped to make it into a slab.

I didn't hear anything about toned coins but PCGS is EXTREMELY tough on ANYTHING classic sans Morgans.

I just received two toners in a recent submission that I thought sure would bag so I'm gonna say no I don't think they are any more critical than they usually are.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I just recently cracked out these from Ngc 65 plastic and got back a 64 and 65 in Pcgs plastic.I was satisfied.

  • Toners seem fine to me, but don't bother with mint state large cents. Or any other early copper for that matter. At least at economy level.

I'm just curious why you cracked them? Is the premium for PCGS plastic enough on those dates to risk getting back a 64? I have a hard time believing that a NGC 65 is worth less or equal to PCGS 64.

I'm sorry, but this is another reason why I think the toned coin (toned commem specifically for me) hobby is not something I am pursuing any longer. Just way to much ambiguity IMO. This month a coin is AT but next month it's NT???imageimage

Not too long ago I had a couple bump, one drop a point and a few others grade the same. They were crackouts from NGC and ICG plastic.

I find that scenario hard to believe...

    My question as well.
  • All of the coins posted so far look like real natural toning. I could understand if they cracked down on the crazy looking florescent stuff that seems to appear quite often.

That appears to be the current situation...

  • You know what isn't tough on toners right now, what doesn't judge the coin at all, but it looks real purdy, is a Dansco album. Break free of the plastic snobbery!
  • Apparently, they weren't tight on the one being discussed HERE!
