Funny observation...
Coin shops - or at least the ones I go to - seem to hand out 40% silver more often than any other source.
I don't know if it's intentional... just a joke... or an accident - but either way it's quite interesting.
It seems to me like it's a joke. I spend $1,000 on a coin, and they toss in another - worth about 2x face (usually 20c).

A small fortune considering it would have to be a 1965 - 70 dime punched from 40% silver half dollar stock. (I really don't think any exist. They would probably never pass through the counters. Dimes struck on quarter stock seldom make it through the counters, let alone half dollar stock.) They never intentionally struck any 40% silver dimes.

Is this US money? I thought the 65-70 Kennedy Halves were the only 40% US. I think Canada had some 50% silver dimes though

A 40% dime was never issued by the US Mint and as far as I know, none exist. The only 40% moderns that exist are the Kennedy's 1965-1970, the business strike Silver Eisenhower's and the Quarter, Half and Dollar Bicentennial coinage. The IKE proofs were 40% clad coins but I doubt they give those out in change.
