Sintered 2007 GW Dollars- Rare or new fad?

ManorcourtmanManorcourtman Posts: 8,206 ✭✭✭✭✭
I don't know what an expert would pay for one but they are selling for strong money on eBay. I just lucked into 5 of them in a Denver $1000 box. I've been through over 10k GW's and these are the first ones I ran across. Any opinions on them from the error guys. I have a couple on the bay and have 25+ people watching them, not sure why? Are they really that tough to find or it is a new eBay fad? I've also noticed some on eBay that looked baked because the edges are blackened beyond what a sintered coin edge should truly look like. I'd appreciate some others insights/opinions on rarity. The three I found yesterday are the darkest of the bunch and I'm considering send them in to PCGS for error service slabbing. Thanks!!

I rarely run across sintered planchets and have actually only seen the one I sold plus some Peace Medal Nickels. Other than that, zip.

I think the coins do have a certain rarity but as to how much, I just don't know. I also think that with the current "error" trands on EBay, that everybody and his brother/sister are scrutinizing these coins for errors of any kind to be able to turn a buck which is why so many have been showing up and a few have been faked! Coin Collecting and EBay can do alot to bring all aspects of the hoppby into the publics eye. After all, who wouldn't want to grab something for a dollar and then sell it for anywhere from $5 to $1,000?

Perhaps Fred Weinberg will get in on this thread. I know I asked him about my Peace Medal sintered planchets and I'm sure he's fielded hundreds of questions from newbe's like me.

BTW, mine went for $197 so I think the buyer got a major rip! Good Luck on your's!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!

Would anyone care to define "sintering" and explain how the process is supposed to be connected to Washington dollars?

I would like to get a sintered one with no edge lettering. Sorta like killing 2 birds with one stone.
