How do you sort your cards? By year/brand/number or by teams?

Now, as a set collector who keeps all his sets in binders, obviously I have no choice but to have them by year/brand/numerical order (though I have been tempted to do my Topps sets by teams in alphabetical order, but I doubt I ever will). I also did much the same as a teen (when I first got into buying packs and such) and also did them mainly by year/brand/number. However, most of my friends at school who collected cards (at least back then there were some) all said they sort theirs by team. Another article I remember reading showed a card store owner talking about people who bring their collections from back when they were kids (the ones lucky enough to have not had them dumped). He reported that rather than having say, all their 1964 together, then 1965, then 1966, for example, they'd have all their Red Sox together, then Yankees, then Dodgers, then Giants, then Braves, and so on.

So how do you sort your collection? By year/brand or by team? Alphabetically or numerically? At least with the Fleer/Ultra/Flair sets from the 1980s/1990s they already come sorted by team and alphabetically if you put them in numerical order. image

  • The other day while sipping a glass of lemonade I was mulling this very question over , but alas, I was left wondering if I prefer pink lemonade over yellow lemonade. After all why pink lemonade ? Pink grapefruit juice makes sense but pink lemonade ? I'm sorry what was the question ?

Year, brand, team. THough, I have been attempted to do them in team order. I don't think I will end up doing it.
  • as a young collector (in the early 60's) i always sorted by year/brand alphabetically...
kept track of "haves & wants" on checklists and was always able to quickly locate any player from any team!
... and never could understand preserving them any other way... image

As a ute, I sorted by teams.

    Currently.....

Graded cards, I sort by player.

Raw, I sort by type of card. GU/REF/AUTO, etc.

I seldom get any/much pleasure from cards, but when I
do it is because I can inspect all of the graded cards
    by player.

By registry in individual PSA boxes, and by year inside each box, kept inside a safe.

I put sets in binders by numerical order. Random star cards, that do not go in sets, go in binders alphabetically by last name. Commons go in boxes by team so they are esy to sell as big team lots when space is needed. Money star cards go in storage boxes, in cases, by year.

  • Alphabetical by player last name in binders. I found that when I used to keep my sets in binders I would never look at them again when the set was complete. I found that by keeping the collection in order I look at my cards more often I go to add newly aquired cards to the fold. This is also good for me since I tend to buy random packs and lots from time to time with no immediate goal of completing that particular set. Every card has a home in my system.
