What qualifies as George Washington First Day of Mintage?

On the back "cover" it states that Denver's first day of mintage is November 28, 2006. I and my family toured the Denver Mint on October 19, 2006. Our guide showed us a bin full of GW dollars and a running machine making the GW dollars. Now, we were up on a catwalk and couldn't see the coins up close but I could make out that these coins were not Sac's. So what gives? Did these coins have to wait until November 28 to get their final edge lettering and thus qualify for FDofM status? Something is not right in Den(mark).

  • Well, I know during the search for $1000 boxes of sealed GW coins, I was keeping a running list of inspection dates - with the earliest being November 16, 2006...

  • << <i>Wow, that's interesting. I happened to notice that the Mint website says this about the covers - "The postmark of February 15, 2007, Mount Vernon, VA, marks the day the George Washington $1 Coins were first released to the Federal Reserve Bank and to the public."
Clearly this is incorrect. A lot of banks (and private citizens) had these prior to Feb. 15 so obviously they were released to the Federal Reserve banks before Feb 15. What's up with all the wrong info? >>

Feb 15th was the official release date. Banks were instructed NOT to release the coins to the public prior to this date (although some did anyway). They stocked the banks 2 weeks prior to the official release date.
