Some neat toners in an aftermarket Canadian Mint Set?

Local antique auction had a few inexpensive goodies tonight. Picked up this "Mint Set" or so it says for $5.00. Is this just an aftermarket piece of cardboard someone put coins in?

Anyhow, I liked the toning on 3 of the pieces and nobody bid against me image

It was in a plastic/vinyl cover, but it wasn't very photogenic. Funny just the top 3 coins toned.

Had to take some strange angles to get the color in the photos. Any opinions?

Nice coins-nice price. Canadian coins of the mid to late 60's were prone to this type of toning. There are some real blazers out there.

  • Good catch! With 1,1 oz. of silver, the bullion value is right at $15.00 for the set.

I love finding toned Canadian sets like that. I have one toned set and several loose coins that are very attractively toned.

The set you have is very nice!

    Thanks guys.

Does anyone know if this is an original mint set package/product? I didn't think so, and doubt it adds any value to the set (As I can get to the coins), so was going to put them in single holders instead for better protection. I think the Canada sets are similar to the US sets with the sectionalized sealed plastic holders, but wasn't sure if this was some sort of souvenir set or other official thing.

  • No, the original packaging was 'pliofilm' ala US Mint products of the era.

There was a spectacular boxed set that had the $20 gold coin in it. This set would have sold better; however, it was not allowed to be sold in the US. We US collectors could only get the set with a medal in its place. I can't remember what the medal's composition was...

In a strange coincidence, I just laid eyes on one of those spectacular '67 boxed sets with the gold coin in it yesterday about 3 hours before I saw this one... with some pretty nice colors too on some of the coins I might add. Wasn't the darker outer edge toning blue like these, more a subtle pastel blue, but I won't let the cat out of the bag, I'm sure the new owner is working on pics as we speak image

Thanks for the info, they're going into their own holders then.

A number of banks sold sets assembled from circulation coins (the ones I've seen had the banks' names on them). I'm sure dealers put sets together to sell to Centennial memento seekers, also.

  • The .500 silver coins the RCM minted can be real unique as far as toning. I have a 1971 British Columbia silver dollar that is just amazing.
