Home Sports Talk

Mariano Rivera and Brian Bruney

All Yankee fans hope that Mariano Rivera can pitch forever and continue to be one of the most dominant relief pitchers in the history of baseball but some day father time will eventually catch up with him. I hope we are not seeing the beginning of it. As a Yankee fan it's kind of scary seeing two consecutive blown saves but I hope that it's just lack of use because most of the Yankees wins have been blowouts so the Yankees have only needed him two times this year with poor results. Mariano was lights out in Spring Training. For any Yankee fans who have short memories do any of you remember two years ago when Mariano had two blown saves at the start of the season against the Red Sox?

This Brian Bruney guy has been great since the Yankees picked him up after Arizona dumped him last season.
He is only 25 years old and I can see him replacing Mariano some day as a closer. Do any of you Arizona or NL fans know anything about him and why Arizona released him. I had never heard of him until the Yankees picked him up last year. David Ortiz was once dumped by Minnesota. image

Bruney has a 0.96 ERA so far this year and last year his ERA was 0.87 with the Yankees:

The 2007 Giants were never perfect nor meant to be. They were fighters, scrappers....now they could be called something else, World Champions."

I guess it is only normal for this kind of talk given Rivera's age. He is not done ..... his stuff was normal rivera both blown saves, his location was hardly Rivera.

Anyway, Brian Bruney ???? huh ....... i don't know. He is pitching better then he ever has and the Yanks did get him off of the scrap heap .... but CLOSER? huh ..... interesting .. but I don't think so at this point. HUH?! .... good question coin!

don't count Rivera out yet...he's still the best in the business as far as I (non-Yankee fan) am concerned.
  • Parade, Bruney throws extremely hard and I have been very impressed with him. I am not ready to throw in the towel with Rivera by no means but Rivera can't pitch forever unless he has a Bionic arm.

Mo blows saves early every year. Hell, I remember a TITANIC blast Mark McGwire unloaded on him WAY BACK when he was still a Oakland Athletic. Dead center waaaaayy up in the black seats in Yankee stadium.

Mo will be fine THIS year and quite probably next year. After that???? yeah it will probably be about time? But who knows ..... the man is not human.

But Bruney? Yeah he throws hard .... but Bruney? huh .... HUH ..... huh ...... HUH ... I would be thinking more along the lines of Scott Proctor at this point.

  • Mariano looked old and rusty tonight; he can't pitch forever. The Sox' have gotten to him more than the average team.

the Sox are more than the average team and they play NY 19 times a year...so of course they have. Baseball is all about the law(s) of averages applied over 162+ games, right?

Yep, but the second something happens out of the ordinary that favors someones team they try to extrapolate that happening like it will be a season long trend. It is amazing the amount of people that don't realize just how long a baseball season is. over reacting to every up and down is just absurd ....

Hear, Hear Mo. well done! Bruney in training.

Parade, I never overacted. I knew the problem might be that Mo wasn't getting enough work but someday somebody will need to succeed him.

I was at the game and wow was Karstens in agony. Tough way to start and end the game. Igawa was simply great. Big Papi bounced into two Double Plays which is seldom seen.

  • I could see Bruney taking over the 8th inning one day and Farnsworth moving back to the 7th, but the closer job is Rivera's for a long time. I'm sure that the Yanks will sign Mo for 2 or 3 years after the season is over.

thegem, I hope you are right but Mo is going to be 38 years old this year. Mo is a very smart pitcher and although he doesn't pitch 100 mph anymore he has developed a few more pitches in his repertoire. I would love to see Mariano be the closer another 4 or 5 years for the pinstripes.
