Question

Going to a show soon and need help on choosing helmets to get signed. Reggie Bush, J. Montana, and Emmitt Smith are the three I will meet for autos. For Bush I want to get a USC helmet because I really hate the Saint design (no offense to fans). Might have to find a gold sharpie for him to sign with, unless they are supplied. Montana and Smith I have no clue which kind to get still searching around.

Now the show is approaching fast and I need some gear.

Looking for full size helmets and authentic but if it costs too much $$ I might get a replica. What do you guys think?

Please also advise me on any websites with the best deals on helmets.

    USC for Bush

Again if it cost to much $$ in the end I'll just get a replica. The word "replica" just disturbs me and I have no clue why.

(EDIT: Both helmets can be found at the bottom of this post)

By casual observation, you can't really tell the difference between an authentic helmet and a replica, other than the price.

Staying somewhat on topic (and sorry for hijacking your thread), I'm looking for 2 helmets if anyone can help a brother out:

    An unsigned Heisman helmet

    An unsigned HOF helmet

    Thanks in advance image

Edited to add: I've only seen them at shows and can't find anything on the interweb image

Edited again: Both helmets can be found via google product search:

In talking with a dealer friend, he told me at bigger shows there is usually someone selling authentic helmets for around $125-$150 range. I would think that with an autograph lineup like that, someone would have some helmets and such for sale for them to sign.

Of course, waiting to see if someone at the show has them is taking a risk, so you may want to have a back up plan if that does not work out.

    Just my two cents. image

    I found Riddell's fan shop:

The "official" helmet from Riddell is $259.99, so the auction above is cheaper with a $175 BIN.

Edited to add: I've found numerous HOF and Heisman helmets via google shopping image

Stuck on the Emmitt and Montana, should I get an older style helmet or newer?

Got all the full size helmets in today, now just need some sharpies at my local store.

    USC helmet- Gold Sharpie

    SF Helmet- Black

    Cowboy helmet- Black

Any kind of sharpie work best? I know its a stupid question but I have to ask.

Someone told me a regular marker is best for autos, sharpies tend to smear more.

What about a gold paint pen. No prior experience, just a suggestion.

No clue about the paint pen.

I have seen them used on baseball helmets during spring training and they turned out nice. Plus I've never seen a gold sharpie.

If I were you I would pick up a gold paint pen and see the difference, very good idea Goot. You can pick one up at a toy store or a hobby shop, it will give you a nice shiny metalic look, you might like it better.

I would go the Sharpie, they come in all colors (and now sizes) including gold.

If you knew that all players would take their time to make a nice signature, a paint pen might look better, but with a sharpie you don't have worry getting it the pen going, the player will be use to the feel of the pen, et al. Plus they are much cheaper then a $10 gold paint pen, remember you are going to get more down the road perhaps, and Sharpie is a thinner ink.

But if you pay a few hundred for the helmet and everything, I would be more concerned about buying the right pen for this auto then buying the $1 sharpie later.

Same helmet and thats the color I want

Thats the same helmet I have full size authentic, I want the same color auto. In the morning I am going to rush to Staples and pick up a bunch of sharpies then decide.

Is that Sharpie or paint pen?

    No clue.

Ok, it looks kind of like a paint pen to me. I may be wrong though.

"Ok, it looks kind of like a paint pen to me."

No way you or I could tell. In person you could because the paint is thicker.

The thicker is why you have to get the paint pen going first, and a sharpie being thinner means it writes easier. If you do go paint pen, make sure you go with one of the very name brands, as you will likely want the same color later down the road.

USC for Bush - Gold Sharpie
49ers for Montana - Blue or black looks fine. Don't expect much from him though. He's kind of a dink at signings in my experience.
Cowboys for Emmitt - Blue sharpie

The real helmets are worth a fair amount more than their purchase price if you are going to resell, but I did replica's for the two I had signed and they look fantastic in the cases. I have Aikman on one and Montana and Rice on another.

Be VERY careful with a gold auto. They quickly fade, even in UV protective glass. If you display it, make sure it's exposed to minimal light.

Make sure you post pictures afterwards and good luck image

OK, I didn't see anyone using this thread anymore so I figured I'll use it for a question I have , Instead of making another thread .

The question I have is, I just opened a pack of Topps 2007 opening day and pulled out a 1/1 Willy Taveras Yellow printing plate .
Does anyone know what that is ?
    Is it worth anything ?
Do these things get graded too ?
