Question about grading and a Mantle

Does PSA grade any card no matter what the condition? I saw a 62 Topps Mantle that was in terrible condition today, all four corners were frayed, creases across the middle, etc. if a card was sent in like this, does it automatically get a 1 or would they not even grade it? If they would grade it as a 1, what type of price would it go for? I don't know much about vintage cards and grading, but it would be neat to own a Mantle even in a poor condition.

If it does not get a "1" then it will get a "Authentic" I believe.

The only exception is if their machine that seals the cards, with a sonic boom, would damage the card. So a 3/4 of a burned Mantle rookie, likely would not be graded.

  • PSA does not grade any card "no matter what the condition". If it's trimmed, MC, or they have doubts about the authenticity, they won't grade the card.

Very true on the authenticity points Mark B. I was answering more along the line of terrible condition, but authentic....and assuming it meets the holder (Which all means there are a lot of exceptions)

  • I am just going by condition, assuming it is authentic and they just give it an authentic grade, what does something like that sell for? It is marked at $59 in a card shop, I'm no expert, but that seems a little high to me.

if it's as beat up as you say it is that price is too high - plus you want to get it graded so add another $20 plus with fees/shipping each way. you should be able to get an already graded psa 2 for that price.

marked at $59 in a card shop,

    That's about right, 59.00 for a 20.00 card. <eyeroll>

    Don't buy it.

Save your money until you can buy a nice one
    in a PSA holder.

  • I didn't think the price was right, I just wanted the more experienced collectors on here to confirm that.

I hate to think about what that Mantle looks like. I can't remember seeing a vintage early 60's Mantle in a cardshop for a $59 price like that in a long, long time.

This cardshop I go to for supplies, and his card prices are "reasonable" for a cardshop, has a 62 Mantle right now, atrocious chipping and some scuffing, really an unattractive looking card because of the bad chipping, it would almost definitely be a PSA 2, possibly a 1.....and he wants $325 for it. image

Since you're willing to spend at least $59 for it, you'd do much better buying off ebay - finding that card in low grade condition isn't rare on ebay, so be patient and look for a good deal when you're bidding. For $59 you can get a "decent looking" low grade condition raw 62 Mantle.
