Along the lines of Ron Burgundy....

....we all agree that not every card should be graded. Wouldnt it be nice if you could send lets say a 700 card set to psa...have them look over the cards to guarantee they are not altered..and send them back with maybe a letter stating which ones were or were not altered??? I think this would assist some of in our raw set building. No idea how long it would take per card to determine if its altered..what do you guys think?

<< <i>and you propose this would cost how much? they won't do it for free. >>
And it would also be their (subjective) opinion at an inflated price -- hence Ron Burgandy's point...
<< <i>If they are in a binder and they are altered but you can't tell does it really matter. As long as the card looks nice and don't cost to much who cares. I have a few cards that won't grade because they don't meet minimum size. They are just as nice to look at as a graded mint card. >>
That's exactly my position as well. Back in the day, we used to buy altered or off-centered cards from dealers that were label as "MINT" and sold for High Beckett. We didn't blink an eye as we bought them to build our raw sets. Nowadays, it's probably a lot more feasible since raw cards go for so little, comparatively speaking.
Boo, in some ways this makes me fell a bit silly, because quite honestly I'm not sure I could detect many alterations. In fact, I'm pretty sure I cannot. And I'm not sure I want to put the time in that it would take to be that informed. Am I alone? Quite frankly, I feel like I can more or less "grade" a card. I rely on the "professionals" to detect the counterfits / alterations. In some ways, I have a hard time understanding how, in a reasonable amount of time, PSA can even train new graders to detect alterations. Maybe it's easier than I think?
<< <i>I think you have some peculiar misconceptions about third party grading if you think PSA can somehow detect alterations which a diligent and informed collector cannot detect on their own. >>
it aint pecular to know your not an expert at grading cards....I have not been trained and I dont claim to be a card "doctor".
also...
if im spending money on cards i want them to not be altered...."who cares"???...jesus...what kind of crapola is that. We are HERE because we DO care. Sometimes people on these boards simply amaze me.
"How about this idea: PSA offers slabbing service (not grading) for $1.00 a card, minimum 100 cards, for modern cards. You can skip the graders and go straight to the slabber. Get a raw NM set slabbed for less than a grand. PSA gets it's name out there on millions of cards. Collectors who like the protection of slabs get their collection slabbed. PSA makes some easy money. Everyone is happy. "

I would love for this to happen! I don't collect sets...but I would love for them just to determine that the card is authentic and undoctored...nothing else Let me determine the grade. I wouid obviously want them to also do it for vintage cards too...not just modern.

As long as their taking the trouble to determine the card isn't altered they might as well grade the card. How long does it actually take to 'grade' a card? 15 seconds, tops? Most of the time is spent making sure it hasn't been worked on.
In any case, I'm sure PSA has no intentions of offerering any service whatsoever at $1 per card.
