I got the following email through the account that I have linked with Ebay. I assume that this is a spoof email because I never bought anything from this person, and have not bought anything on Ebay in over a month. Are other people getting these?

  • It is definitely a spoof. I get ones like that all the time. I also get many "non paying bidder disputes " for all kinds of products I never bought. Do not reply to these. Dave W

  • I have received that one several times. Also have gotten one about an alleged dispute that has been filed that needs my imediate response or my account will be suspended. Often, you can mouse over the hyperlink button and a box comes up that says the website may be misrepresenting itself and may not be the proper site, or something to that effect. However, that is probably email software specific response. This is how Eudora handles it. It's a nice little feature, but I don't rely on that alone.
Witty sig line currently under construction. Thank you for your patience.
  • I make it a point to never respond to any e-mail concerning e-bay/paypal. If it's legit it will be in my e-baypaypal message box.

Even still you can get spoofs in this section. All that needs to happen is one account get taken over and thousands can go out. It happened to us.

I get 2 or 3 of these a week. Just for laughs, I have been testing the phishing filter built in to IE7. So far it's flagged all of them.

  • Another good tip to remember is that you can right click on any link, then click properties and it will tell you the address of the link. A link can be made to read as anything, much as posting a link here. First rule is cover thy butt.

I get that stuff all the time from people complaining that they didn't get the laptop they bought from me (of course I never sold anyone a laptop) questions about payment methods for something I never sold anyone, some are nice some are threatening, the only thing
they want you do do is click on the link in the email with your password to respond to them. Never do this.

This morning I got one where according to them I sold an item in British Pounds and they had a question on it. Someone must
have a program that just collects email address by the millions and automatically sends these junk emails out.
