woodgrain early lincolns-any information appreciated.

I'm thinking of starting a collection of woodgrained Lincolns in MS RB slabbed. I've only seen them in the teens. How far do they go so far as dates, and are they available in all dates and mints into the 1920's and later? I'll probably be the only idiot wanting to put together a set of them. Any information appreciated. Steve

I personaly have seen some as late as 1926 but with enough digging you might find some after that. I'm not sure why but the planchet quality got much better after 1926, different supplier or perhaps different quality control checks by the mint. Good luck with your hunt.

The "grainiest" Lincoln I ever saw was a 1923-P that was MS64RB. I came very close to buying it, but since I didn't really need it, I passed. This was about 7 years ago.

  • Thanks for the information. Up to 1927, at least. Anyone have anything else to add that will help me. Steveimage

You can pobably find them for almost all dates and mints, some far more frequently than others. I've found the early S-mint cents to be the most frequently woodgrained.
  • Here are a couple 'newer' ones I found, the '55 looks awesome in hand:

  • I have seen this into the forties and fifties on Lincoln Cent. But can't say I have compared what I have seen with that of the early
Lincoln's.. I do however notice a larger % of this effect seen on 54-S and 55-S compared to near years.
But once again, these do not grab my attention , as I see this as a plachet flaw. .. But I also collect Black jeffs.

Wow that is one cool idea for a collection. It will be difficult but challenging with one cool result. Plus some people consider this a planchet flaw and not attractive which might place some coins at a discount price. I am not one of those and find the woodgrain lincolns quite attractive. Good luck and keep us posted with pics and updates if you decide to pursue this adventure.

I've seen some pretty good woodgrain metal on 09-S and 10-S as well.
