Why the price difference in Mantle '52 TOPPS/Bowman ?

I understand, really well, the forces of supply and demand
in the collectibles market.

What has caused the huge difference in price/demand between
the 1952 TOPPS Mantle and the 1952 Bowman Mantle?

When did the market first begin to decide that the TOPPS card was
"the one?"

Is it possible that the Bowman is "underpriced?"

  • I prefer the 51 Bowman to the 52 Topps. I know I'm in the minority here but I always liked the 48-52 Bowman line. Bigger isnt better to me when it comes to cards....

Storm, good question and one I have often wondered about, Also with the 51 Bowman being his rookie card.

Wasn't the 52 topps double printed?

IMO the '52 Bowman is a really bad looking card. Just my 2 cents

The 1952 Topps card was one of the first well known baseball cards and has had hobby lore for decades. That is why it's so much more expensive then a 1951 Bowman rookie card, let alone the '52 bowman. The '52 Topps Mantle is up there with the T-206 Wagner in terms of popularity and legend. There are cards more scarce than either but few are as well known.

Back in the late 70's early 80's when the mantle cards started to rocket bowman was not a current set like topps was.

also the 51 not the 52 bowman is his rookie card from that set.

the 52 topps card is full sized while the bowman is not

the 52 topps card was abundant therefore it was marketable.

the 52 topps card has stats on the back the bowmans do not.

in the 80's when the mantle cards started to move almost everyone wanted topps.

To answer the question posed though the 52 topps is valued over the 52 bowman simply because it is his first topps card while the 52 bowman is his second.
