RUSS are there many 64 Kennedy's with big die crack's like this one, More photo's added to the myste

At 1st I thought it was a big scratch but under my loop it look's like a die crack, to bad its not in better shape.
I took a look under my 10X loop and it does not look like a scratch?
Russ is going to take a look so I will let every one know if its junk or not, Thanks for looking guys

Looks more like a scratched die. Die cracks start from the edge. This one does not.

Im not sure about that, Ive seen a lot of Morgans with die cracks that are not by the rim?

That is a very nice and prominent die scratch. It is very likely that obverse die did not remain in production for long at all. I would keep that one close and look for more and for possible bad polish jobs to repair the problem.

It's not a scratch, it appears to be raised above the coins surface.

That is sweet piece, and I imagine it's rare.

i too think is a narly die scratch and not a break in the die.
it really looks cool the way it seems to go behind his ear and through the back of his head.

die scratches are always raised,just like die cracks.
otherwise it is post mint damage

It seems to go UNDER the hair as well. Would a die crack do that?

I"d need a much closer picture to be sure, but it looks like damage to me.......if you take a sharp knife to a coin, it makes a ditch with metal raised on the sides of it. It is easy to confuse this with a die crack until you look closer.

It is not a Die Scratch or other Die Error, imo.

If you take a look at one side of the "line", you will
probably see a deep cut into the surface of the coin,
causing a raised "line" - look at either the left side,
or right side, of the scratch, and see if you can see
what I'm describing.

You see this effect on numerous "Cancelled Morgan Dollars",
which are made with some type of "exacto knife".

Use at least a 8-10 power magnifying glass, and let us
know what you find.

Die cracks and/or die scratches are extremely rare on 1964 proof Kennedys. In fact, I don't remember ever seeing one. Thus, I would tend to agree with Fred on this.

I think this could be definitively determined with some quality close up shots of the crack/scratch/thing at a slight angle.

Sego had a 64 proof set that had a Kennedy with a die crack. It was still in the cello. I knew I should have bought it from him!!!

My guess is a post-mint scratch because it ends at the back of the head, then starts back up in the field. If it was a die scratch or gouge, I would think that it would be a continuous line, even at the back of the head.
