I'll assume you're jesting. If you haven't got a copy of Breen/Gillio "California Fractional Gold", I'll be glad to provide the necessary info on rarity. I just photographed an 1875 BG-849 octagonal 1/4 $ today(yes, it is holed) which is rated a high R-5. Even with the hole, this one is worth well over melt...

It's a nice piece of history... but nope - not worth much in AU grade let alone holed. It's not a rare variety either. The majority of known examples of this variety are found in TPG mint state grades. At least the hole provides character

Let's see Coinduece says it is a high R-5 (31 - 45 known) and 1798centcollector says it is not a rare variety. Now I realize that a lot of the varieties may be this rare or rarer, but I still consider an R-5+ coin as rare. (Maybe not expensive, but rare)

Writersblock, I was referring to the The BG-912 "jgrinz" picked up in the Heritage auction and led the thread off with. It is an R3 coin. This is not a "rare" coin either by numbers or condition. Coinduece was referring to his own coin, the BG-849, as an R5, I assume. It's actually an R6 if you look at the PCGSs numbers.

Should I have my Brother the Jeweler fill that thar hole - buff it down and Sell on Sleeze bay
as repaired ( Repair disclosed of course )

OR shoud I mount it and frame it and hang it - Pray to it as the "holey " thing it is .. ( Upon bended knee of curse ) spelling on purpose for comic relief - MINE .

Writersblock, you misread my post. I stated that my BG-849 is a high R-5. Not the BG-912 posted here... I merely speculated that the BG-912 might be a rarity before I had an opportunity to review it in Breen/Gillio.

It is on its way here as we speak.

Will be a nice addition to my Holey Gold Hat. I already have a small holey octagonal California fractional on it, but the hole in that one goes through the edge, so the coin was "unwearable" until repaired, which I had not gotten 'round to.

This is a nice upgrade for me and I'll probably sell my old one, now, and split the proceeds with the generous donor who gave it to me.
