Question about those 2 page advertisers in Coin World-- 3 weeks for deliver and no descriptions all

I was taking a look at the most recent issue of CW. I never pay attention to those “two page advertisers” in the paper, but I decided to take a closer look at their terms and conditions. For one advertiser, he stated that even if you pay with a credit card, it will take three weeks to get your coin delivered! I can understand that if you pay with a check there might be a week delay before delivery, but with a credit card? Why do you need to wait three weeks?!?

Also, there was a little blurb in the same ad that said something like, “all of our coins are kept in bank vaults. Please do not call us asking for “a more detailed description” about a particular coin in our ad. We cannot do that. Just tell us the kind of coin you are looking for and we will find it for you.”

Imagine the nerve of this advertiser! How dare a customer call and actually ASK about a coin! I don’t know how these firms stay in business.

  • They prey on the nieve and uninformed much the same way the telemarketers prey on those that haven't mastered the internet. That's how they can sell a ASE NGC 70 set for 4x what the same set costs on eBay.

They don't keep any meaningful quantity in stock. They accumulate the orders then buy off of FACTS, CoinNet, etc.

Don't waste your time worrying about it.

I see all sorts of bizarre things everyday, including the woman up the street who takes her dog for a walk but carries it.

Having dropped out of the coin scene for twenty years, when I returned in 1994, I decided to refamiliarize myself with Coin World. I ordered a few odds and ends with a couple of those "Two Page" advertisers; - which was a mistake, as most of us realize; I sent Bank Checks to facilitate the shipments, which took two to three weeks, but when I received the harshly treated/ cleaned/ corroded garbage they touted as Choice AU/ Gem BU, I immediately sent back the coins Registered Mail. One dealer didn't return my funds for eight weeks, even after my repeated calls asking what was going on.

"Big Mistake" - as Julia Roberts said in "Pretty Woman".
Those purchases I made were just testing the waters
before I took the plunge into buying serious coins.

For two years now, I have not subscibed to any newpaper / coin magazine,
    - with the exception of the ANA Numismatist & the PCGS Rare Coin Market Report
which are sent free to members. Between the PCGS & NGC web sites, I have all the coin
information I could possibly ever want to digest. Being able to link into "Authorized Dealers"
web sites has been great and I no longer need to see print ads; I now am no longer disappointed
when I inquire as to the availability of a coin I am interested in purchasing.
