Help me solve a mystery.

It's a mystery to me anyway. Who's number 38 on my icon? Luis Alvarado is listed as number 1 on the Whitesox roster, and must be the person facing on the card. I looked at the roster for 1971,72, and 73 on baseball almanac and didn't see anyone listed as number 38. Who could it be? Someone cut in spring training maybe?

Comments

  • Could be and probably IS from spring training as the photo would suggest

1970 and 1971 No one wore the number
    1972 Phil Reagan
    1973 Dan Neumeier

and both played with Luis Alvarado
  • Thank you. Where did you get the info? I looked both up in the baseball almanac (on line website) and Reagan wasn't in there. Neumeier was listed as number 39.

If you collect uniforms or need uniform numbers, the ONLY book to use is Baseball by the Numbers by Stang Harkness. Its a bit pricey, but more than pays for itself in the long run...
  • Has to be spring traing if it is because Orta wore numer 6 for the Sox
  • Wow, very interesting. Thanks guys. The almanac does have him listed as number 6. So, that begs the question, why number 38 on the 1973 cards? He wore #6 in 1972 so it wasn't as if he was new to the team in 1973 spring training and got a different number for the reg season.
  • It could have been a pic from 72 spring training. Topps werent exactly spendthrifts when it came to taking pictures for their cards. Many photos were recycled and/or airbrushed over the years as a lot of threads have shown

In addition to being "pricey," the Stang Harkness book is outdated. A comparable, updated alternative is a great reference book published last year entitled "Now Batting , Number....." by Jack Looney. Cover price is $29.95 and is available at your Borders, B&N, etc. It includes a lot great things about uniform numbers including rosters with every number of every player.

God I love these message boards. Seriously, where else could you go and ask a question like that and have it answered in a few hours, with photos of cards with the guy wearing the uniform.

    Nice work guys

No, it does not (neither does the Stang Harkness book)

  • Is it common for playes to have different numbers during spring training or is this an odd situation?
  • Nope. Not unusual.

Players used to wear numbers in the 50's and 60's (or any numbers not issued) during spring training and once the team had set their 25 man roster (along with coaches), the more conventional numbers would be handed out once the team went north (for rookies, not already established players).
That is why sometimes a players number would change many times if he never stayed long with the club and someone else would end up wearing it.
