Only a few cards short of 2007 Master Set

Well, thanks to another successful snipe I am only a few cards short of a 2005 Topps Series 1 "Master Set". Please note that this "Master Set" does not include the relic/autograph cards, 1/1s, copper or gold parallels as those are out of the "you'll be able to afford this" price-range for complete sets.

I recently won an auction for 24 of the 25 A-Rod Road To 500 inserts. (Link). Not bad for $37. I then went and picked up #25 for only $3 total. That gave me the entire Series 1 set for $44 including shipping. Not bad if I say so myself, especially since a completed set just went for near $80 a short while ago.

Right now, I need but a handful of base set cards and quite a few of the Mickey Mantle HR History cards to have the "Master Set" complete. I'm hoping to get this done before June when Series 2 hits and another few hundred dollars will need to be spent to get a copy of everything. image
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.

I hope you can complete the second half of your master set too. I tell ya what, doing master sets from the mid 90s (Fleer/Ultra/Flair) is hard enough, I can only imagine how much harder and more expensive it is to do 2000s sets.

    Good luck!

    Excellent Jdurg !
And good luck on your quest .

I have never tried to collect the full sets , but just watching you all, getting all excited about actually getting all the cards you needed has made me want to give it a go .

I just don't know where to even start, with all the different types of cards . . . especially the new Bowman Sterling and the like .

I can see myself goin broke trying , that's for sure .
For me it has always been exciting just getting those few Really really great pulls , But I think it is time to move on to a much more challenging part of this hobby .

I think the way I will try it, will be to pick the one or two that I have the best chance of completing .

I sure have a hell of a lot of work to do !

    Congrats though Jdurg !

Yeah, I don't know why I picked 2007 as the year to try completing a "Master Set". Perhaps it's because it's the first card design since the 2001 set that I really liked and found attractive. Either that or it was the first time in YEARS that I had bought packs and put together a regular base set the old fashioned way. Sure it would be nice to add the 1st Edition Parallel and the Gold Parallel to this "Master Set", but I just don't think that will happen. At least not this year. I just want to get as much of this done as possible before Series 2 comes out so that I can complete Series 2 before Series 3 (Traded/Update) comes out. I think I may have found a seller for the MM HR History set I'm looking for. I just need to find out how much he's asking.

It's pretty neat being able to go on E-Bay and find some completed insert sets DIRT cheap. I mean, ten bucks for a set that cost at least forty bucks to complete is pretty nice. I got my Delmon Young variation card for a steal, and now just need to get the other variations. Thanks to some poker winnings these past two weeks (Nearly $1000) I should be able to hunt down and find at least one more of these variations.

Well, if I may make a rather "partisan" suggestion? Why not try to collect all the 1994 Fleer/Ultra insert sets? Of all the Fleer/Ultra/Flair master sets, those IMO have the very best variety and most interesting of set designs. And they're pretty dirt cheap too, the challenge is just finding them (as sets; you want to buy them by sets, you really do). All I'm lacking now is the "one per box" all foil 1994 Ultra insert sets shown in my sig.

Say, maybe we could do a master set club here? image

Woo-Hoo! Thus far on E-Bay I have only seen one of the photo variations for this year's Topps Series 1 set. (Delmon Young). I was able to pick that variation up for about $50 if memory serves me right.

Last night, I picked up the OTHER photo variation that has been seen thus far; Andrew Miller. Link. For $150 total (includes shipping and insurance) I was able to add this surprisingly popular individual's card to my collection. Looking through various price guides, this kid's rookie card is going for high prices and I have no idea why. I figured this variation card would probably run me close to $200 the way this kid's other cards are going, so I was happy to have gotten it as cheaply as I did. There is another one of these variations on E-Bay right now (Link) which has a few days left in it and it is already up to $76. Now I just need to find the other three variations to get this part of the "Master Set" completed.
