<< <i>Following up storm888's post regarding lawsuits and settlements, I just watched the press conference given by University police Chief Wendell Flinchum and all I could think was that Chief Flinchum was speaking as though he had already realized that the authorities had made a critical error in not shutting down the university after the first shooting around 7:15 a.m. Would shutting down the University after the first shooting have prevented the second shooting? Who knows?
But the real inquiry in the eyes of the law is whether reason would have dictated that the university be shut down. Perhaps this is one of those prime examples of what should or should not have happened, e.g. the second shooting around 9:50 a.m. should not have happened. For those other members of the bar, I see big settlements after getting past a demurrer and motion for summary judgment.

Wouldn't the University be protected by sovereign immunity? Or is Virginia Tech a private school?
"Wouldn't the University be protected by sovereign immunity?"

No.
The regents and the high-end alum are going to be doing some serious fundraising real soon. The "facts" coming out just seem to get worse and worse.
The poor VT president cannot seem to stop talking to the cameras. He has already gotten trapped into saying, "We did all we could to warn students after the first shootings." The U's lawyers need to get their guy away from those cameras; now is the time for him to simply say that he is crushed by the tragedy, and retire from the media frenzy.
I hope the dead students' parents force the school to institute adequate security measures, as part of any settlement.

i hesitated to post this, but the madman was stopped.. by a bullet.. unfortunately it sounds like it was by his own bullet and only after he had killed as many people as he chose to kill..
so, he was stopped.. by a bullet.. i just wish it had been done earlier..
TNP, I just joined you in reporting all 16 of these auctions as well... I doubt they will still be with us come morning. The lows some people will stoop too never ceases to amaze me sadly. My thoughts and sympathy are with all those affected by this senseless act of violence today.
The cynical nature of that person’s mind is most interesting.
He assumes that folks have been so corrupted that someone will actually buy that domain. He might be right, but I suspect not; the price is too high.
My guess is that the seller is not an ignorant or wholly uneducated person.
My favorite line:
“If you are an activist you may want to create a website to focus upon GUN CONTROL as a focal point using this event as a showpiece for the worst case scenario of gun ownership.”
But, if that don’t float your boat, Viagra and mortgage rates are cool, too.
It may be that America no longer has terribly much to show the rest of the planet, other than how not to be like us.
Amazing.

Here's the name and address of the guy who registered all those sites.
This information was taken from "register.com" which is a public place and anyone can view the information there, so I saw no reason to just copy and paste here.
Ok, how do I make a fake eBay account to buy them all so I can just instantly leave neg feedback for him? And how much trouble can I get into if I would really do something like that. I just set up the fake yahoo mail.
ok, just set up the fake eBay thing too. I just used all his contact information in the blanks. Now, what type of police trouble can I get if I just go and do all the buy it nows on the 16 auctions?
Ok, I thought it over and don't want to get into any kind of legal trouble on this. So, I just email Hannity and Combs at FoxNews.com on this. I gave them the information on eBay, the guys user ID, and a full list of domain names he has registered, and his contact information. Wonder if that will really go anywhere. Those guys really like to bring people down, so why not let the world see who this David West really is.
I just wanted to check with the morality police that roams these boards if it would be all right to inform the seller of the domain names what I think about him? I wasn't sure if this poor guy trying to earn a living like the media would be off limits. Please create a new alt and respond when ready.

I think it's part of the uniquely American idea that senseless tragedy can almost always be prevented if the right precautions are in place. Not that this is a bad approach to have-- it is somewhat empowering, and there are many instances where this perspective is valid-- but it can lead to some very curious recommendations for public policy.

The question I'm asking myself is . . . .
How does one even stumble upon a domain name like that ?
The teacher though, was killed .
That teacher saved countless lives .
A hero beyond words .
I can't help but wonder how these students feel about this teacher this morning .
That news absolutely broke my heart to know this teacher probably knew he was going to die , but he put his life on the line anyway .
God Bless this teacher .
Words simply can not describe how much of a hero this person is .

He was selling names like VIRGINIATECHMASSACRE.COM
His justification was that the media was making money off of this event so why is it wrong for him to make money.

Posting his contact-info in this or any other thread is
a very irresponsible and dangerous thing to do.
