Pay Pal Account Question

Just received an e-mail from Pay Pal that someone else has tried to access my account on April 14th. Had to go in a change and verify some things to get it back to normal. Anyone else have this happen to them??

Probably a scam. Go directly to the Paypal site through your browser, not an email link. Change everything again, you may have given a thief all your account info. If the email from Paypal starts out "Dear Paypal user" you may be in trouble. It should have your full legal name if it is from Paypal. Never click an email link! Hopefully you'll catch it in time!

It was legit, they used my full name. When I log in this pops up next:

Why is my account access limited?

Your account access has been limited for the following reason(s):

Apr. 14, 2007: We have reason to believe that your account was accessed by a third party. Because protecting the security of your account is our primary concern, we have limited access to sensitive PayPal account features. We understand that this may be an inconvenience but please understand that this temporary limitation is for your protection.

I'm pretty sure it's a scam, I got the same email...I then went into my account (through my browser, not the link), and everything was fine with my account...not sure how the scammers get the info they do, but its the reason they are so successful at phishing.
  • I had a problem about a week ago but it was my ebay account that was allegedly "compromised". I had to change my password. It was legit. I think it may have stemmed from the fact that I logged in from two distinct IP addresses concurrently. Maybe they watch for this type of activity on Paypal as well. Just a hunch.

Here is the solution to all of your PayPal problems.

They have a new loging procedure for $5.00. Yes it does cost money but it is nearly foolproof. You get a keyfob that generates a different password everytime you login. You cannot login without it. I have had it for almost two months. I also have it attached to my Ebay ID.

Exact same thing happened to me last week. Had to change my paypal and ebay password information.

Nothing was charged and they probably did it for preventive measures.

I had the same thing happen Saturday night as I was trying to pay a vendor on the Paypal site so it was not generated by an email at all. After changing passwords and verifying info, my account access was returned Sunday morning.

  • I receive those e-mails frequently. I just access Paypal directly to double check and all is well each time.

I nearly fell for a similar kind of email that pretended to be from Ebay. Now before you all start laughing at me, this was around 2003 or so, long before people really knew about these emails (or at least myself). It looked so real, I had no idea it was possible to create such a good forgery. And I did click on the link, "logged in" and started filling out the form and had they not gotten greedy and asked for bank account info, I would've fallen for the whole trap. You see, Ebay does keep a credit/debit card on file to verify your idenity, but I've never heard of them wanting bank account info (and this was pre-Paypal merger too), so that's the red flag I needed. At least back then they did a good job with them; not like the tons of them you get today with typos and grammatical errors. image
