World coins - HELP needed identifying a few: More pics added in post #9

Hey all,

I don't get over to this side much, just once in awhile, but I am here again.

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine handed me four 4x5 holders of flips that had world coins in them. He is newly married and these were given to his daughter (from his wife's previous marriage) from her father. He wanted to know if there was anything worth anything and if so, sell for him.

I helped him out on the US coins awhile back but I was stymied at this. Some I have identified, some are corroded and worthless. Some, look like they should be easy but aren't. I think, after going to the PNNA show here in Washington State this weekend, and my son doing the YN treasure hunt and getting 5 world coins, that these are all but worthless.

I have taken a few pics hoping to just get an idea of what some of them are and if they would be worth anything. I doubt, even if I put all 4 holders (almost 100 coins) up on ebay that it would be worth it though.

So, if anyone has any comments on these or knows what/where they are from, that would be cool.

There are others as well, that I can't even read the writing on the coin....what fun what fun.

Thanks!

"these were given to his daughter (from his wife's previous marriage) from her father"

    Okay, I'll ask...(but I'm a tad cranky tonight)

Why are they getting sold? How old is the daughter and does SHE want to sell them? Not worthless if they came from her Dad unless of course he was some abusive jerk or something like that. Otherwise it seems a little cold selling off the coins her Dad gave her.

The first two are British halfpennies. They are common dates, even in top condition. The '59 can be had for a buck in full lustre and the '37 for around $3-$7 in full red.

Not 100% sure, but the last one I think is Switzerland 20 Rappen...

The 1959 almost looks like a VIP Proof.

My understanding is that it is an area she isn't interested in and there is a lot of bad blood. This was her decision, her mom's decision, and he came to me for help.

It does have an odd look to it and it is very well struck for a Gillick portrait.

    Thanks folks.

Here are the rest of the quick images I did. If anyone thinks any of these are worth someone selling or keeping, let me know so I can tell him.
I am trying to get him to keep a couple for her, just in case, but so far, they haven't any interest.

    #5 is a French 2 Franc
    # 6 is a German 1 pfennig, no idea on the mintmark the scan is too dark only the "G" is semi uncommon.
    #7 is a Peru 5 soles
    # 8 I think is (memory check) either Egypt or Syria it is a 10 something or another though (big help huh)...
#9 is Saudi Arabia 10 Halala

Not much help I am afraid... I am sure others will chime in and identify them for you. So far it looks like nothing earth shattering or rare.

    Thanks Rick,

On #6 ... the coin is VERY dark....where is the mintmark so I can look....are these "plain" as well as mintmarked?
For #8 and #9, I was thinking it was arabic or something but I can't even make out numerals image .... what is "Halala"?

The 1905 1 Pfennig was minted at 6 different mints that year A (Berlin) D (Munich) E (Muldenhutten) F (Stuttgart) G (Karlsruhe) and J (Hamburg) the mintmarks are found under the eagle just above the rim on either side of the tail feathers AA, DD, etc. There is no "plain" coinage like the US had for this series. I collect all of the German Empire by date and mint and have the A, D, F, and J of this year.

What is a Halala? On the monetary side there are 5 Halala's to 1 Ghirsh. Maybe like 5 of our US 20 cent pieces to equal a dollar? I never really thought about it before. The Pfennig is much simpler, 100 Pfennig to a Mark. More like what we are used to with our coinage. They even issued some off the wall denominations much like the US did.

    << <i>1942 South Africa "1/2 D" (dollars?) >>

The D stands for penny in the old British system (and on that British colonial South African coin).

Sounds weird, I know, but that dates back to Roman times, when the penny was called a denarius. Therefore, 1/2d = halfpenny, 1/4d= a farthing (quarter of a penny). This is why you can still go to a hardware store and see abbreviations like "10d nails" for tenpenny nails. (I assume they once sold ten for a penny, which would be the origin of that term).

Thanks again Rick, and thanks Rob.

Rick, your description of the area for the MM helped. It is pretty worn down and the left one is hard to see. The right one, under a microscope, appears to be a capital "A" so I believe this was Berlin (AA)

Except perhaps for number 2, they'll all be "scratchtray items", with a CV at or under a dollar.

No. 8 is from Libya: 10 dirhams 1975.

The Saudi one (No.9) is dated 1392 Islamic calendar, equating to 1972 AD.
